As the Cavaliers track teams head outside this spring, both men and women look to make progress in Division II.
Walsh Track coach Rob Mizicko said his teams performance at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Atheltic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Championship Meet was an "eye opener." "It was rough," Mizicko said. "It was our first year in the GLIAC. We’re not at the DII level." In his first year as head coach, Mizicko was disappointed in both the men's and women's teams, neither placing in the Top 12 of the conference indoor championship. But that's in the past and now he's moving his teams on to the spring season, where they can focus on weaknesses discovered over the winter. "The amount of improvement shows our kids are already stepping up," Mizicko said. The better the competition, the better performances this team will give." The men's team is led by a…

After moving up into a new division and conference, Cavaliers' Coach Jaime Porter thinks her team can be competitive with the bigger schools.

Moving to Division II and a new conference will be a new challenge for Walsh baseball this year.
The Walsh Cavaliers baseball team will have its hands full this season with a much more difficult Division II schedule. In its first full season in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) the Cavaliers are hoping to rise to the challenge. With a team full of returning letter winners and seniors, as well as many high-achieving students, Head Coach Tim Mead thinks his boys have what it takes to win the GLIAC season championship. However, because of a ban from the post season because of the change to Division II, Walsh will not be allowed to compete in the conference tournament.

Allison Cadle, a sophomore museum studies major at Walsh, got to see Pope Benedict XVI's retirement firsthand this week
Walsh University students and staff had a front row to history as Benedict XVI officially retired as Pope Thursday. For Allison Cadle, a sophomore museum studies major at Walsh University, it was an unforgettable experience. "(I allowed) myself to be carried away by the contagious energy and passion of the crowd," Cadle wrote in an email to North Canton Patch. "It is impossible not to appreciate the kind of love that I saw in the faces of people from all over the world. It is something I will never forget." The Pope Emeritus' resignation took effect about 2 p.m. Eastern time Thursday. This leaves the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church vacant while its leading clerics consider who should succeed him, reported the New York Times. …

Sara Stone and Bill Poyser had attended Walsh University together without crossing paths. But, in May 2011 they officially met at a church co-ed volleyball game after they had been invited by friends. "Being competitive people like we are, we connected right away with the fact that the group we were playing with was less than worried about actually playing the game, so we were making the best of it with funny comments back and forth," Stone said in an email to North Canton Patch. The two knew it was a match. Stone, a Hoover High grad, and Poyser, a Louisville High grad, posted a photo in North Canton Patch's "cutest couples" gallery and were named North Canton's cutest couple (we had community editor Megan Rozsa determine the winner). The …

Albacete shared his expertise on writing and public speaking with Walsh University students this week as part of the university's "Professor for a Day" program
Thinking back to his days writing reviews of the Canton Symphony Orchestra for the Canton Repository, M.J. Albecete recalled the stress of finding just the right words to express himself — and doing so on a very tight deadline. For the longtime writer, the intense laboring over an orchestra review made sense. For others, like Albecete's wife, it did not. "My wife would come in and say, 'Why do you kill yourself on this? You don't get paid enough to do it ... Why do you do this? Why do you punish yourself this way?'" Albecete said. "And my answer was, 'Because I love it.' Tomorrow morning I'll pick up the paper and there will be that review with my name on it." Albecete would pride himself on the impact he had on his readers and would love…
