Holiday Paws Pantry Back for Second Year

Check here for North Canton businesses taking part in this year's pet food collection and distribution program

It won't be difficult to find the most convenient drop-off location for this year's Holiday Paws Pantry.  Sixteen business — and counting — have signed on to help collect pet food supplies for the pantry this year. Not only that, the Canton Charge will display the drop-off bins at all their home games this year. Jennifer Harrington, owner of the graphic design company The Ad Lab, organized the event in its first year last year. The event, also organized by the North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce, ended up bringing in 4,900 pounds of food, which was distributed to 132 people during the one-day food bank. “We hoped the program would be successful, but I think we were all a little surprised by just how successful in was in its first year," …

Organizers Call Holiday Paws Pantry a Success, Plan for Another Event

Community members donated toward a one-day food bank for those who need a little help feeding their animals. And from start to finish, the Holiday Paws Pantry was a hit.

There’s no denying it: The Holiday Paws Pantry pet food drive and one-day food bank was a success. Community members donated food at several North Canton locations (all members of the North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce) from Nov. 14-Dec. 18. Then, the Chamber hosted the one-day food bank at its office Monday afternoon and gave away food to 132 people. “I would definitely call it a success — more than any of us ever expected it to be, with both the collection and the distribution,” said Christina Weyrick-Cooper, the Chamber’s outreach manager. Organized by the Chamber and Jennifer Harrington of The Ad Lab, the Holiday Paws Pantry brought in about 4,900 pounds of cat and dog food as well as kitty litter and other pet supplies. It aimed to…

Paws Pantry Deadline, Distribution Day Draw Near

You've got until Dec. 18 to donate pet food at several donation locations. The actual distribution day is Dec. 19.

Editor's note: All information was supplied by the North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce. For the past couple weeks, community members have donated loads of pet food for the Paws Pantry, a one-day pet food bank held at the North Canton Area Chamber Office. We're getting close to not only the deadline for donations (Dec. 18), but the actual distribution time, 4 p.m.-8 p.m. Dec. 19. Pet food will be distributed to families in need on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Chamber office. The Paws Pantry has a goal of providing a one-month supply of pet food for up to two cats or dogs per home.  In 2009, the ASPCA estimated that 500,000 to 1 million dogs and cats are at risk of becoming homeless because of the economic downturn. Pet food …

Pet Food Drive Puts New Spin on St. Patrick's Day

Jim Collver, founder of St. Pet's Day, asks residents of Stark, Summit and Portage counties to donate pet food through the end of March

Jim Collver, founder of the St. Pet’s Day pet food drive, is in awe of the support he’s received from people in three Northeast Ohio counties and is confident that by the end of the month they’ll have collected 25,000 pounds of food. Collver has been busy drumming up attention for the cause and asking around for donations, which residents can drop off at about 80 area fire stations. Those include North Canton, Bath, Cuyahoga Falls, Fairlawn, Kent and Stow. He’s taken photos at each of the donation sites and uploaded them to Facebook. Many feature the “honorary chair pet” Jake, a 12-year-old Black Lab/Collie mix that Collver’s fiancee rescued about 10 years ago. “You can see the reaction that we’re getting, especially now with the photos at…
