State performance index ranks 936 school districts
The Ohio Department of Education released a preview of new performance index rankings of school districts and buildings. The North Canton City School District was 82nd among the 936 districts that were ranked. "Performance index is actually one component of the state report card," said Dennis Evans, Ohio Department of Education public information officer. "There are other measures on the report card as well." The performance index scores are different than those on the last report cards because this report used updated data on state testing. Scores are based on how well each student does on all tested subjects in grades three to eight on Ohio’s Achievement Assessments and on the 10th grade Ohio Graduation Test. Students at all levels – …

The school rolled out a program to test out how students and teachers can integrate technology and the Internet into the classroom
Monday was a different kind of day for Hoover High School sophomore Morgan Landy. She arrived at school with a laptop computer in tow, something she normally doesn't do. And she was able to use that technology in her Spanish class at the encouragement of her teacher. In fact, Landy was one of several students using laptops, iPod Touches, iPads or other Internet-accessing devices that day as part of the school’s Bring Your Own Technology pilot program, which takes place during the next month and involves eight classrooms. "Bring Your Own Technology is one of those options to say, 'Hey, this could be a way to get newer technology into the school district,'" said Eric Curts, technology director for North Canton City Schools. "So that's one of…

The district decided it will implement all-day, every-day kindergarten for the 2012-2013 school year
The North Canton City School District will hold off on implementing an all-day, every-day kindergarten for this year, according to a document released this morning to update K-5 staff and families of elementary students. The school district hosted community meetings to discuss the best way to start all-day, every-day kindergarten, and it also took suggestions through online forms and through e-mails, Superintendent Michael Gallina said in the document. K-5 staff also filled out surveys. The district won’t make a final decision until spring, and it won’t begin an all-day, every-day kindergarten until the 2012-2013 school year. Gallina was unavailable for comment this morning. Here are some highlights from the document released this morning…

Shreve, who keeps stats for Hoover High games, is the voice of Cleveland Browns Stadium and much more
Jeff Shreve would like to prep for his duties as Cleveland Browns public address announcer for an AFC championship game this weekend. Instead, he will be working on the stats crew for Hoover boys' basketball. It's all right, though, as long as he can be closely involved in any game he watches, said the resident of Greentown, located in North Canton City School District. "I would be bored if all I could do is just sit there and watch," Shreve said. Shreve began "working" games in high school as a statistician for GlenOak High School basketball. He moved on to Mount Union College (now named University of Mount Union) and started doing radio play-by-play for both Mount Union football and basketball. Shreve remembers two particularly long …
