Readers Fired Up Over North Canton Schools Levy

Over the past week North Canton Patch readers shared their thoughts about the idea of a 2.4-mill permanent improvements levy for the school district.

The North Canton City School District recently announced that it will ask voters to support a 2.4-mill permanent improvement levy on May 7. The continuous levy would generate about $1.44 million annually and cost the owner of a $100,000 home $73 per year, according to the Canton Repository. North Canton Patch readers are responding with their thoughts about the levy on our site and our Facebook page. Many of them are not happy. Ann Marie said: Live within your means just like we have to. Cut back on your bloated administration! Some of your own employees are complaining about how you waste the taxpayers money. I continually vote NO on all school levies and am forced to pay because most of NC citizens vote yes. I am sick of paying such high…

helen You hit a good point. NC evolved as a working middle class (mentality) with some upper and not much on the other end. Now there is a movement in city hall and elsewise to emulate a Hudson, Beachwood, Fairlawn type communities that grew up much different than NC. So we have people that want to spend NC’s way into something it is not. They only make it unaffordable for the pack a lunch and go…   more ›

North Canton City School District officials invite the community to attend a town hall-style meeting from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. Jan. 15

North Canton City School officials had planned to reevaluate safety procedures in the coming year, but the recent events in Newtown, CT, put those plans on the fast track. In light of the Dec. 14 shootings that left 27 people dead, North Canton City School District will host a town hall-style meeting to discuss safety and security within the walls of its schools.  The meeting, led by Superintendent Michael Hartenstein and North Canton Police Chief Stephan Wilder, takes place from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. Jan. 15 inside Hoover Hall at Hoover High School. "The intent of the meeting really is for us to get input from folks, to find out their ideas, their thoughts, their concerns, and we'll just sort of capture all of that," Hartenstein said. He said a …

We already have the protections Plain installed in some of our buildings and I personally don't think any of those steps taken by Plain were protective enough to prevent another tragedy - they were what I refer to as a false sense of security. I appreciate the administration offering an open forum to hear ideas and parents concerns - we haven't had that in a long time. After hearing one persons …   more ›

Because I didn't make it to this meeting last night, I checked in with Board President Nancy Marion today, and she said everything on the agenda had been approved, save for the agenda item regarding the basketball coaching staff and junior/senior basketball players attending a coaching clinic and campus tour in Louisville, KY, Nov. 2-4. "... the board members felt that this did not benefit all …   more ›

How Does the North Canton School District Rate with Others? Use This Tool to Find Out

You can learn how any Ohio school district performs by using this easy online search form

Every year the state of Ohio rates its 600-plus school districts by more than two dozen criteria, from graduation rates to how students perform on standardized tests in reading, math and other subject areas. Ratings for the school year that just ended won't be out until August, but you can get a good idea how things stand by looking at data for 2010-2011. The ratings are not without controversy, of course. Some argue that they force a "teaching-to-the-test" approach that undermines real learning. And districts with already high-achieving students say it's tough for them to meet requirements that they demonstrate year-over-year improvements. But faulty or no, the annual report card remains one of the few ways to make meaningful comparisons …

North Canton School District Looks at Lockdown Protocol After Chardon Shootings

District officials already have met with North Canton police and plan to meet again to review lockdown procedures

Michael Gallina, North Canton City Schools superintendent, reminds families to keep connected with their children as much as possible in light of Monday morning's high school shooting in Chardon that left three students dead. “We really need to connect with all of our students, even though sometimes students are hard to connect with, and I mean that from student standpoint as well as staff standpoint," Gallina said Tuesday afternoon. "And families should be mointoring social media as much as they can in terms of their child’s usage of that and anything that might be a red flag.” Suspect T.J. Lane of Chardon Township posted information on social media sites that would have been viewed as "red flags" to any adult, according to a psychologist…

Has anyone ever noticed that it's always the "nicer" school systems that are having the shootings? The differences in our children somehow don't mesh quite right. Some students may feel inferior to others, which could be one of the forces leading to this type of problem. Lets all review the attitudes that we instill in our children!   more ›
