Construction of North Canton's amphitheater is still a go, but the timeline for completion has been set back. North Canton Rotary Club members had anticipated construction at Bitzer Park in spring of this year, but things are moving a little more slowly than they originally expected. "It'll probably be later on down the road," said Brent Fatzinger, president of the North Canton Rotary Club. "I would say in the next two years we'd like to try to do something." Fatzinger said the group is about halfway to its goal of $75,000. One way the Rotary Club is raising money is the annual Rotary Chili Open, which requires people to brave the cold conditions for a day of golfing at the Fairways Golf Course. This year's event takes place from 9 a.m.-3 …

The amendment came about because the lease was breached, but council members say it puts the city in a better position to possibly sell the property
An amended lease agreement regarding the Fairways Golf Course will give both the city and the property’s operators more leeway in the future, Council President Jon Snyder said at Monday night’s meeting. Snyder said the new agreement makes it easier for the city to sell the property, while also making it easier for those leasing it — R&S Golf Properties, Inc. — to buy the property. Under the present lease, the city couldn’t sell or lease the property for six years. “It’s a win-win for us both,” Snyder said. He said the property’s operators had breached the lease agreement by falling behind on property taxes. Under the new agreement, if the city plans to sell the property, it must tell R&S before June 1, 2012, and June 1, 2013; and R&S could…

All five candidates running for North Canton City Council at Large attended the forum Wednesday night at the Fairways of North Canton and answered questions submitted by the audience
All five candidates running for North Canton City Council at Large attended a candidates forum at the Fairways golf club Wednesday night. They answered questions about Issue 2 (see this update featuring video statements from each candidate), increasing the number of jobs in North Canton and the possibility of entering into a joint economic development agreement with nearby townships. They also discussed the Fairways golf course, which is owned by the city, and whether they would like to see it developed in the future. Voters will vote for three of the five candidates. The Stark County League of Women Voters hosted the event, while Attorney Richard Kuhn moderated. About 25 people attended. MARK CERRETA Bio Blast: Grew up in North Canton; …

Mayor David Held told North Canton City Council Monday night that he hopes the city will approve the construction of a ditch that would run along a utility road at the Fairways
City officials believe that creating a 400-foot-long ditch in Fairways Golf Course could cut back on flooding problems for nearby residents. Mayor David Held announced the plan at Monday night’s North Canton City Council meeting, saying he hoped to get it on council’s agenda as soon as possible. He said the ditch would alleviate not all, but some of the flooding problems for nearby residents. That includes Hillary Mueller, a Ward 4 write-in candidate who talked to the Canton Repository about substantial flooding on her property after the July 19 rainstorm. “So this really will be an immediate way that we can prevent the water rolling down to the Muellers’ and then to the Zimber Ditch,” Held said. “It’s not a complete answer, but it’s …

After council denied the possible purchase last week, resident Chuck Osborne put council on the spot by addressing the issue before the North Canton City Council meeting Monday night
Councilman Mark Cerreta attempted to quash any rumors about the possible purchase of the city’s Fairways golf course before last week’s meeting of the North Canton City Council adjourned. But that didn’t stop resident Chuck Osborne, who’s running for council-at-large this year, from taking to the podium Monday night to share his thoughts about the subject, which he said council members have discussed in secret. He told council members he’s learned of the city ending its lease with R & S Golf Properties, Inc., which leases and operates the golf course. He also mentioned an appraisal of the golf course in August that cost taxpayers $3,800, leading him to believe the city will soon sell the property, and likely for much less than they bought …

Mayor David Held told the paper he met with Diebold representatives and went over three possible locations for its new headquarters
North Canton Mayor David Held jumped at the chance to promote North Canton as a new home for Diebold, hoping to increase the number of jobs within the city. In fact, it was only one day after Diebold announced it would build its new headquarters in Summit or Stark counties before Held contacted the the global ATM manufacturer, according to a story in the Canton Repository. “We would like to have the Diebold headquarters in North Canton,” Held told the Repository. “It would be a privilege to have a Fortune 500 company with 1,500 jobs coming into the community. That would (help) make up for the 2,400 jobs we lost with the Hoover facility.” Held and City Administrator Michael Grimes met Monday with executives on the Diebold site selection …
