Hoover High Principal: Upcoming Drug Search to Target Students' Cars

The building underwent a lockdown and drug sweep in January, and Hoover High Principal Tony Pallija says the school also will see a search of students’ cars in the spring

Hoover High administrators plan to follow up a January building-wide, random drug sweep with a search of students’ cars this coming spring. Police officers didn’t find any drugs when they locked the building down Jan. 25 and searched lockers throughout the entire school. But Hoover High Principal Tony Pallija said a follow-up search of students’ vehicles this spring should reinforce the need for safety and compliance at the school. “Sometimes they just need friendly reminders,” Pallija said at Wednesday night’s North Canton City Schools Board of Education meeting. “It sends a message to the students and the community that we’re not going to tolerate people bringing drugs into Hoover High School.” Pallija said the January drug sweep, which …

New TSA Checkpoint at CAK, a Local American Idol & More: Week in Review

It's been a pretty busy week in North Canton, hasn't it? We're making it easier for you to catch up on your news with this Week in Review update.

1. A North Canton teen turned himself in after he heard police were looking for him. Police say James W. Knappenberger, 19, struck Cynthia Hernandez, 23, as she ran across the street at Mt. Pleasant Street and Ladonna Circle outside Uniontown about 11:30 p.m. Saturday.  2. Lake High School senior Amelia Finefrock has headed to Hollywood! Random Drug Sweep at Hoover High Yields No Drugs

North Canton police led K-9 units throughout the entire building Wednesday

Police didn't find any drugs when they conducted a random drug sweep at Hoover High School Wednesday. The North Canton Police Department brought in several K-9 units and worked with North Canton City School administration and conducted the random multi-jurisdictional sweep of the entire building, according to a news release from the police department. The 30-minute canine sweep involved detailed planning to provide a collaborative and proactive approach between the school administrators and the police department, according to the news release. The goal was to successfully locate and remove drugs from the school, to help ensure the safety of the students and staff with minimal disruption to the learning environment.   The school was placed …

Were the offices and belongings and cars of teachers and staff also searched? Because, you know, you might find drugs in those places as well. If you don't want drugs in the school, you need to make sure they aren't found anywhere, and that includes drugs that may be brought in by teachers and administration. I would love to hear the arguments against such a search.   more ›
