Cast your vote for North Canton's Person of the Year by 5 p.m. Friday
Time magazine may have named President Obama their Person of the Year, but North Canton residents know that many of their neighbors are worthy of the title. Who is North Canton's Person of the Year — the man or woman who, in Timespeak, "most influenced the news this year for better or worse?" Take a look at the choices, nominated by North Canton Patch readers, and read about what has set these individuals apart from the rest. Then take a moment to cast your vote and help decide 2012's Person of the Year for North Canton. The poll will close at 5 p.m. Friday. The person who nominated Lavelle wrote in to Patch and said: "Working two jobs, raising a family, and still finding time to volunteer at four locations keeps Heather's days and nights …

Artists, entertainers and shoppers took over Bitzer Park this weekend as New Work City Foundation hosted its first Sunday in the City event of the year
This weekend's Sunday in the City event brought in artists from across the spectrum for a full day of entertainment in North Canton's Bitzer Park. Artists ranged from jewelry-makers to wine glass painters and furniture restorers. Staci Ford of Furniture Zombie was new this year to the event, which now is in its second year. Ford brought with her several upcycled items, like music records molded into containers and old furniture that was given a new life with interesting new fabric. "I had sold stuff on the Internet for a long time and it was really just for friends and family, and they thought I was nuts," Ford said. "And then it just snowballed into this monster." Ford said she was pleased with how the event turned out Sunday. She had …

Those who arrive at the Taste of North Canton event Wednesday night will get to sample the best of the city's grub, slice by slice and bite by bite. Owners and employees from more than 30 area restaurants will be on hand, passing out samples of their popular dishes that night. "If each one gives you a tiny sample, that’s a buffet," said Vicki Stanley, founder of New Work City Foundation, which has hosted the annual event for four years now. The event takes place from 5 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Wednesday and costs $10 for adults. Kids ages 6-12 are $5 and those 5 and under are free. Tickets are available through Stanley by calling 330-323-5745, and you can also pay at the door. If the thought of sampling 30 different restaurants' dishes doesn't …

The programs open the door for special needs students to get real working experience and gives them the opportunity to find employment within the city
For the past few weeks, six special needs students from Hoover High School have gotten the chance to work in local businesses to gain hands-on experience. The students are all participants of Transition U — a collaboration launched by Patti Thoman that connects North Canton City Schools and Walsh University and gives special needs students a college experience. But within Transition U, the students also are participating in “You’re Hired!” — a hands-on work experience (think of it as an unpaid internship) for all six students. They work inside a variety of businesses (this month it was Ermanno’s Legendary Pizza, Dansizen Printing and American Medical Personnel), and the hope is that each student gets hired part-time at one of the …

These five stories were pretty popular this week
1. Katie Eastman always will have fond memories of Hoover High School. We got to talk to the '10 Hoover High grad, former cheerleader, runner and Ohio University sophomore about her Memorial Stadium-inspired artwork that's hanging inside her alma mater. 2. We launched our Deck the House Contest this week, which means you could help North Canton public schools win $100,000. How? Do what you always do — deck your house out in your best holiday decorations and take some photos. But this time, submit them to us and sit tight! 3. Patch contributor Lisa Lynch-Frank interviewed Vicki Stanley about writing her father's life story. What you're about to read is pretty inspirational and might make you want to write the story of someone you love. 4. …

North Canton resident and business owner, Vicki Stanley, shares her experience of writing her dad's life story
Vicki Stanley is a busy lady. Not only is she the CEO of American Medical Personnel and Chore Chaser, she also started the nonprofit organization New Work City Foundation. But, out of all those achievements, her biggest accomplishment and greatest challenge came from her journey within — a journey that started with writing the true life story of her dad, Richard Grudzinski, and ended with Stanley learning a lot about herself. "Dad expressed an interest in writing a book that compiled all of his philosophies in one place as a platform for his public speaking," Stanley said. "He was considering either writing the book himself or hiring a ghost writer." "I immediately begged him for the opportunity to let me be the one to tell his story. I …

Isn't it amazing to see how anonymity allows people to become the worst possible versions on themselves? It's a shame that such a well meaning concept to recognize great people in our community has turned into a venue for cyber insults.   more ›
