McDonald, 54, passed away Friday after battling esophageal cancer
Calling hours for Sheriff-Elect Michael A. McDonald will take place from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. today at the Canton Civic Center's McKinley Room. McDonald, a 32-year member of the Stark County Sheriff's Office, died Friday. McDonald had won the seat over Republican candidate Lawrence A. Dordea in the November 2012 election. Then, McDonald had announced in January that he would not take office because of issues in battling esophageal cancer. According to legacy.com: A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Louis Catholic Church in Louisville with Fr. Lawrence Frient officiating. Michael A. McDonald, the man Stark County voters chose as the county's 47th sheriff, has passed away. McDonald had won the seat over Republican candidate Lawrence A. Dordea in the November 2012 election. Then, McDonald had announced in January that he would not take office because of issues in battling esophageal cancer. Former sheriff Timothy Swanson, a former boss and longtime friend of McDonald's, told the Canton Repository that he'd heard of McDonald's passing shortly after 7 p.m. Friday. George Maier, former safety-service director in Massillon, was selected by Stark County Democrats in February and is now Stark County Sheriff.

Rodney C. Mock, 45, of North Canton, is now charged with aggravated assault, aggravated menacing and domestic violence
A North Canton man was arrested Friday night after reportedly trying to strangle a woman through an open car window and threatening to shoot her. The Canton Repository reported that Stark County sheriff's deputies arrested Rodney C. Mock, 45, after the incident at 55th Street and Market Avenue North. Stark County Jail officials confirmed Mock was in the jail as of Saturday night, with two separate bonds — a $24,000 cash surety bond for the fourth-degree felony charge of aggravated assault and a $10,000 bond for the first-degree misdemeanor charges of aggravated menacing and domestic violence. Jail records indicated Mock tried to strangle the woman through an open car window, but they did not say why, the Canton Rep reported.

A Stark County grand jury issued an indictment for Paul A. Newton, 48, of North Canton. He's accused of causing the crash that killed 71-year-old Sondra L. Oldfield of Canton.
The driver in a Plain Township crash that killed a Canton resident has been indicted by a Stark County grand jury. Paul A. Newton, 48, of North Canton, is charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, first- and second-degree felonies; driving under suspension, a first-degree misdemeanor; failure to stop after an accident, a third-degree felony; and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, a drug of abuse or a combination of them, a third-degree felony, with repeat-offender specification. The indictment was issued Tuesday, according to Stark County court records. A North Canton man who's had six prior convictions for driving under the influence will appear in court this week on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence. Paul A. Newton, 48, is slated to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. today for a preliminary hearing. He's accused of driving a truck that struck and killed Sondra L. Oldfield, 71, of Canton. The fatal collision took place just after 9:30 p.m. July 2 at Easton Street and Pine Tree Avenue in Plain Township. Newton was being held in the Stark County Jail on a $2 million bond as of Tuesday afternoon. Police issued a warrant for Newton's arrest on July 3, and he was arrested that day and taken to the Stark County Jail, according to court records. …

Stark County Sheriff's officials arrested a North Canton man suspected of causing a fatal crash in Plain Township Monday night. Paul A. Newton, 48, of North Canton, was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, reckless operation and a headlight violation. Those charges came before officials learned of the death of Sondra L. Oldfield, 71, of Canton. Here's the account sheriff's officials give of the crash: Newton was speeding while traveling west on Easton Street in a 2000 Ford F-650 truck with no headlights on just after 9:30 p.m. Monday.
