A Stark County grand jury will hear the case involving a North Canton man accused of running a meth lab out of his home. James Clark Haldeman, 48, appeared in Canton Municipal Court Wednesday afternoon for a preliminary hearing, and his case was bound over to Stark County Common Pleas Court. According to the online court docket, a Stark County grand jury now will hear evidence in the case. Jail officials confirmed Wednesday afternoon that Haldeman is still in Stark County Jail. He's held on a $100,000 cash surety bond. A North Canton man was stripped of his driver's license for a lifetime after being sentenced for a crash that killed a Canton woman in July. Paul A. Newton, 48, of North Canton, admitted Sept. 5 to driving the truck that struck and killed Sondra L. Oldfield, 71, of Canton. The fatal collision took place just after 9:30 p.m. July 2 at Easton Street and Pine Tree Avenue in Plain Township. Newton recently was sentenced in Stark County Common Pleas Court for the fatal crash, which happened while he had been drinking. Newton had six prior drunken driving convictions and ran from the crash that night. Howard, who's accused of breaking into the home of a North Canton couple, tying them up and robbing them Aug. 20. Jurors heard from two experts from the Canton-Stark County Crime Lab and a sexual assault nurse examiner coordinator from Mercy Medical Center today — the third day of testimony. The woman recalled the injuries of the female victim, who said Howard inserted either his gloved fingers or the tip of a gun into her vagina. This morning, jurors in the Erick Howard trial heard from the man Howard reportedly tied up and robbed. They also listened to testimony from Seth R. Obermiller, 19, who already has been sentenced to seven years in prison for his connection to Aug. 20 home invasion. Obermiller, who testified today as part of a plea agreement, told the courtroom he and Howard were high on acid and marijuana when they decided to rob a young couple who live in a townhouse in the 1100 block of Sunford Avenue.
