Beyond Christmas Ale: Try Hard Ciders, Belgium and Pumpkin Beers

Local craft beer aficionados share their holiday favorites to help you expand your beer palate. And you can get them close to home.

Rozi's Wine & Liquor House Inc. 14900 Detroit Ave.  Lakewood 216-221-1119 Rozi's Manager Bill Barak gave us the rundown between the two general classifications of Christmas-time beers, Christmas or spiced and winter warmers. “Winter warmers are scotch ales or strong ales. Basically they are heavier more malty. They warm your belly. They are thick and thus take longer to get through. “Then you have your Christmas beers which are spice beers. The actual classification is spice or vegetable beers is the broad style.” In his opinion Ohio is the leader of the spice beers as far as Christmas ales go. There really aren't other areas that produce it or produce it as well as we do, he said. Winter warmer craft beer selection: Breckenridge Christmas…

Tom, I hope I didn't imply there was a decision for Patch to shift its focus away from local news -- there wasn't. There was a company-wide decision to cover the elections closely, especially with so many Presidential candidate appearances in northeast Ohio, which did generate a LOT of debate in our Comments section. But you'll find each Patch site is still dedicated to covering local news and …   more ›

Contessa's Pizzeria Owner: 'We've Come A Long Way in 4 Years'

Geno Ivey looks back on the last four years as his pizza shop celebrates an anniversary and credits much of Contessa's success to its faithful customers

Contessa's Pizzeria owner Geno Ivey says one of the most important things about running a restaurant is that the customers have to be happy, and they have to be having fun. That's obviously what he's doing. Anyone who's dined inside the restaurant at 6630 Wise Ave. has probably heard a joke or two from Ivey as he cranks out dish after dish, clocking 80-some hours a week. Ivey talked to North Canton Patch recently about what has made the business a success as it celebrates four years of serving up Italian dishes. "We've come a long way in four years — from knowing nothing about the business," said Ivey, who'd been selling cars for 27 years before opening up Contessa's. "A lot of stuff we learned on the fly. Customers helped a lot with …

Two Bucks and a Halloween Costume Got These Folks Insanely Cheap Chipotle 'Booritos'

Nearly every person who walked in the door of the North Canton Chipotle on Halloween was decked out in a costume, ready to chow down on a $2 burrito

Chipotle diners across the country scored a $2 "boorito" on Halloween, as long as they were dressed up in costume. North Canton Patch stopped in to the North Canton Chipotle around 8 p.m. that night and nearly every person walking through the door was decked out in some sort of costume — a trio of Bears in the Big Blue House, Pebbles Flinstone and a couple of cowgirls, just to name a few.

North Canton Collision Management Still Beaming Over Summer Improvements

The auto body shop has a new exterior, a new eco-friendly paint booth and lots more improvements. And, according to owner Jeff Coen, compliments are still rolling in.

Noticed North Canton Collision looking a little different these days? The auto shop has ditched the old brick look for something a little more modern — some might say a little fancier and a little brighter — this summer, and it's been a big hit with the community, manager Kerri Wolf said. Customers and community members haven't been shy about sharing their thoughts with the employees at North Canton Collision, either. In fact, one of the most interesting compliments came from a North Canton Police officer. "He wanted to know if he needed to wear a tie to come see us now," Wolf said. Other improvements, in addition to the new exterior, started with a new roof because, with the old one, it "poured inside when it rained," Wolf said. Other …

I stopped by a couple months back to compliment Jeff on the improvements to his shop. Much to Jeff 's credit, he did not come to the city asking for tax abatements to make the improvements like some business owners in North Canton have done. North Canton Collision does its part to support the community. We need more business owners like Jeff who do not expect corporate handouts. I "tip my hat" to…   more ›
