District Hires Part-Time PR Person as 'Second Set of Hands'

The school board approved the hiring of Jamie Smart to work no more than 110 hours doing public relations and communications projects this year

The North Canton City School Board recently signed off on a public relations hire to provide some "extra hands" within the district. According to the school board's most recent agenda, the hiring of Jamie Smart as a public relations/communications consultant for no more than 110 hours was up for approval. Superintendent Michael Hartenstein said the board approved Smart's position, and she will now work five hours a week in the district's central office. "It’s five hours a week, but it’s just a second set of hands here," Hartenstein said. “We’re fairly thin here in the central office.” "We needed some help with new initiatives, and we wanted to make sure we are communicating as quickly and cleanly and efficiently as we can." He said Smart …

Because I didn't make it to this meeting last night, I checked in with Board President Nancy Marion today, and she said everything on the agenda had been approved, save for the agenda item regarding the basketball coaching staff and junior/senior basketball players attending a coaching clinic and campus tour in Louisville, KY, Nov. 2-4. "... the board members felt that this did not benefit all …   more ›

School Board OKs LED Scoreboard, Speaker for Memorial Stadium

The board discussed the $19,000 installation for an LED graphics board, which already is in use at Memorial Stadium, and a $20,000 speaker for the scoreboard at its Wednesday meeting

If you were at the Hoover High vs. Wilson, Ont., home football game on Sept. 7, you probably got a chance to see Memorial Stadium's new LED scoreboard in action. The Hoover High Sideliners, who also undertook the purchase and installation of the stadium's artificial turf, footed the bill for the new LED graphics board, which is inserted into the original scoreboard. The North Canton School Board discussed paying for its installation Wednesday evening. The board looked at the graphics board installation as well as the installation of a new speaker for the stadium that evening. They approved both. Installation for the LED graphics board, installed by Adams Signs at a cost not to exceed $19,000, will be paid for from the district's cell tower…

School Board OKs Lease Agreement with YMCA

The YMCA will keep its location inside the Charlotte Building — where it operates its preschool and daycare — after the board approved a year-long lease

The North Canton YMCA will have another year in the Charlotte Building after the North Canton Board of Education approved a year-long lease Wednesday night. The district leases space in the Charlotte Building at 200 Charlotte St. NW to the North Canton YMCA for the YMCA to provide preschool and daycare services there. On June 20, the board tabled the lease agreement, which would have given the YMCA another 14 months in the building, after citing concerns about losing money through the lease. And then on June 28, the board agreed to continue its lease agreement for two months. Ben Wheeler, executive director of the YMCA, had attended previous meetings to advocate for the lease agreement and attended Wednesday night's meeting to make a final…

School Board Stalls on YMCA Daycare Lease

North Canton City Schools Board of Education tabled a lease agreement that would have granted the YMCA another 14 months inside the Charlotte building at 200 Charlotte St. NW

North Canton City Schools chose not to move forward with a lease agreement that would have given the YMCA another 14 months at its home inside Charlotte building, which the district had talked about razing after the switch to all-day, everyday kindergarten. School board members met inside the Hoover High Media Center Wednesday night and tabled the agreement after citing concerns about losing money through the lease. Board member Chris Thomas said the lease, as it stands, "is not a good business decision for the district." The building at 200 Charlotte St. NW had housed the YMCA Daycare, the North Canton Heritage Society and North Canton Special Education offices. All but the daycare have found new locations. "I have significant concerns …

I attended the BOE meeting Wednesday night. Yes that is the building that houses the preschool and YCare program, ages 3 and up. We love the staff at the NY YMCA Childcare program, all of our children have been touched by them. I wish them well as they continue their search for a new establishment. There was no mention of them closing. Carrie - the new lease is 13 months and would expire Aug. 31…   more ›
