Frank Kemp Jr. Promoted from North Canton Patrolman to Sergeant

Kemp, whose promotion became effective this month, said he's still getting accustomed to his new role and the responsibilities it brings

North Canton Police Sgt. Frank Kemp Jr., the most recent promotion at the department, said he still is getting the feel for his new role but welcomes the added responsibilities. “To me, it’s like putting on a new pair of shoes,” Kemp said. “I’m still figuring out how to tie the laces on them. So we’ll see what the future brings.” Kemp, a graduate of Timken High School, started as an unpaid auxiliary officer in 1994. That was after earning an associate degree in business and communication from Kent State University and serving nine years in the Ohio National Guard. The job takes him from the lower level of North Canton City Hall to an office on the first floor. He’ll use the same parking lot, work in the same building and surround himself with the city’s key players he already has worked with for years. “The difference is going to be I’m no longer a police officer,” Grimes said Tuesday afternoon. “I’m going to have to dial the police, which is going to be different.” Joining the force in 1978, Grimes has been North Canton's police chief for 11 years. As city administrator, Grimes will oversee city departments and field …

The 37-year veteran is off to Florida with his wife Patricia to enjoy his time off. He said he’s proud of his time in North Canton and was looked to as the officer who could find the criminal. That’s something the whole force appreciated about him, said City Administrator Michael Grimes, …
