North Canton Firefighters Respond to Plain Township House Fire

Firefighters from North Canton, Canton and Jackson and Plain townships battled the blaze at 717 Grove St. NE Monday afternoon

North Canton firefighters lent a hand to Plain Township firefighters when they battled a blaze at 717 Grove St. NE, North Canton, Monday afternoon. The fire erupted at a single-story home about 3:30 p.m. that day. Plain Township Fire Captain Troy Slabaugh told the Canton Repository that the fire started because wind carried ashes from outside fire to combustibles that were against the house. Slabaugh estimated structural damages at $100,000 and contents at $50,000 damage to contents.

Man Gets 13-Year Prison Sentence for Fatal Hit-and-Run

A North Canton man was stripped of his driver's license for a lifetime after being sentenced for a crash that killed a Canton woman in July. Paul A. Newton, 48, of North Canton, admitted Sept. 5 to driving the truck that struck and killed Sondra L. Oldfield, 71, of Canton. The fatal collision took place just after 9:30 p.m. July 2 at Easton Street and Pine Tree Avenue in Plain Township. Newton recently was sentenced in Stark County Common Pleas Court for the fatal crash, which happened while he had been drinking. Newton had six prior drunken driving convictions and ran from the crash that night. Man Pleads Guilty to Crash that Killed Canton Woman

Paul A. Newton is expected to serve about 13 years in prison after admitting to driving the truck that struck and killed Sondra L. Oldfield, 71, of Canton. The fatal collision took place just after 9:30 p.m. July 2 at Easton Street and Pine Tree Avenue in Plain Township. The Canton Repository reported today Newton avoided his scheduled trial next week by pleading guilty to charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, failure to stop after an accident, driving under suspension and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, a drug of abuse or a combination of them with repeat-offender specification. Driver Indicted in Fatal Plain Township Crash

A Stark County grand jury issued an indictment for Paul A. Newton, 48, of North Canton. He's accused of causing the crash that killed 71-year-old Sondra L. Oldfield of Canton.

The driver in a Plain Township crash that killed a Canton resident has been indicted by a Stark County grand jury. Paul A. Newton, 48, of North Canton, is charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, first- and second-degree felonies; driving under suspension, a first-degree misdemeanor; failure to stop after an accident, a third-degree felony; and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, a drug of abuse or a combination of them, a third-degree felony, with repeat-offender specification. Man Faces Aggravated Vehicular Homicide Charges After Plain Township Hit-and-Run

A North Canton man who's had six prior convictions for driving under the influence will appear in court this week on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence.  Paul A. Newton, 48, is slated to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. today for a preliminary hearing. He's accused of driving a truck that struck and killed Sondra L. Oldfield, 71, of Canton. The fatal collision took place just after 9:30 p.m. July 2 at Easton Street and Pine Tree Avenue in Plain Township. Newton was being held in the Stark County Jail on a $2 million bond as of Tuesday afternoon. Police issued a warrant for Newton's arrest on July 3, and he was arrested that day and taken to the Stark County Jail, according to court records. …

Stark County Sheriff's officials arrested a North Canton man suspected of causing a fatal crash in Plain Township Monday night.  Paul A. Newton, 48, of North Canton, was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, reckless operation and a headlight violation. Those charges came before officials learned of the death of Sondra L. Oldfield, 71, of Canton. Here's the account sheriff's officials give of the crash: Newton was speeding while traveling west on Easton Street in a 2000 Ford F-650 truck with no headlights on just after 9:30 p.m. Monday.
