Voters Support Petition to End Health Care Benefits for Some Part-Time City Officials

The proposed ordinance aims to end city-paid health insurance for family members of part-time elected officials and limit city-paid health insurance benefits for individual part-time elected officials

North Canton residents turned out to the polls Tuesday to support an initiative petition that would end health care benefits for some part-time city officials. Unofficial results from the Stark County Board of Elections had the initiative ahead with a vote of 6,302 to 2,464 Tuesday night. The proposed ordinance aims to end city-paid health insurance for family members of part-time elected officials and limit city-paid health insurance benefits for individual part-time elected officials. It could save the city as much as $111,000 a year in health care premium and administrative costs. "I'm very satisfied," said Chuck Osborne, who petitioned for the initiative. North Canton EMS Asks for Support on 1.5 Mill Renewal Levy

The 1.5 mill levy will be used for general operations for emergency medical services

North Canton voters will get a chance to help North Canton EMS keep up on its general operations for the coming years when they head to the polls on Election Day. They're tasked with voting on a five-year, 1.5-mill renewal levy that will generate $535,000 a year annually, according to City Finance Director Karen Alger. She said the owner of a $100,000 home would pay $45.94 a year. And there's no change there because this is a renewal levy. The current two-year levy expires Dec. 31 of this year. Fire Chief John Bacon, who oversees the joint North Canton Fire Department and EMS, is hoping for residents' support on this. "Most people that have talked to me are supportive of it because it’s just a renewal — it’s not new money," Bacon said. "It…
