Take a look at some photos throughout the years as the North Canton YMCA celebrates a big birthday this month
We couldn't resist sharing one more photo from the North Canton YMCA's past as the organization continues to celebrate 90 years in the community. That's right; The North Canton Community Building YMCA was established on Feb. 18, 1923. And, in celebration of 90 years here, the YMCA plans to hold special events throughout the month, including a bash at the Fieldcrest of North Canton on Feb. 23. Like this photo, courtesy of the North Canton Heritage Society? You can see more in this blog post from Kathy Yaros, the Y’s family and community director. And make sure to watch for more news about the YMCA's milestone birthday on North Canton Patch.

More than 40 Walsh University students will commemorate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday with a day of service to the community
Stark Parks and the North Canton Heritage Society — along with other Stark County organizations — will get some helping hands Monday as Walsh University students lend their time to help out. This year the students and staff from Walsh University will work with six community partners who address topics of education, homelessness, hunger, historical preservation, environment and elderly care. The group will spend the afternoon on-site with the community partners and have time for dinner and reflection back on campus. In addition to the heritage society and Stark Parks, volunteers will help the Boys and Girls Club, House of Loreto, JR Coleman Adult Daycare and Refuge of Hope. Campaigning doesn't look like this anymore, does it?
In light of Election Day, we're spotlighting a "throwback" campaign shot, courtesy of the North Canton Heritage Society. Here, Richard Nixon and his wife Pat visit North Canton in the 1960 campaign. They're pictured speaking at the Square. "Note the lack of security!" said Heritage Society Director Kathy Fernandez when she sent the photo in to us. You won't see that anymore, will you?

The North Canton Heritage Society's "Open the Door to History" fundraising campaign is still going on, and the society hopes to reach its goal by November
The North Canton Heritage Society is hoping to move locations sometime this fall. But first, it has to have the money for the move. The organization will head over to the nearby Portage building (where Portage Collaborative Montessori School is) at 239 Portage St. NW, from the Charlotte building at 200 Charlotte St. NW, Suite 102. It's not a big move, but it's costly. The society's goal through their fundraising campaign — "Open the Door to History" — was to raise $115,000 to make the new location handicap accessible inside and out. And that campaign is still taking place. "We have about three-fourths of the money we need in hand," said Kathy Fernandez, executive director of the North Canton Heritage Society. "But we won't be able to move …

You can catch a little blast from the past — in the form of Interurban trolley car tracks — when you're heading through road construction at North Main and Applegrove streets
Take a closer look: Can you see railway lines on North Main Street? North Canton Patch reader Craig Barnard can. Barnard wrote in to us this week about the lines that are now visible because of the construction taking place from Applegrove Street to Orion Street on North Main. "If you look close enough, on the intersection of Main and Applegrove, on the recently revealed old brick road, you can see two indentations filled with asphalt about 3 to 4 inches in width," Barnard wrote. Those indentations are actually from the Northern Ohio Traction Line — or Interurban — a trolley that went all the way from North Canton (which was New Berlin at that time) to Canton, Akron and Cleveland, said Kathy Fernandez, executive director of the North …
