Amy Shover is moving on up — from her position as a paramedic with the North Canton Fire Department and EMS to the position of EMS captain. Shover was in the spotlight Tuesday night as Mayor David Held led her swearing-in ceremony before the city council meeting inside North Canton City Council Chambers. Fire Chief John Bacon and other department personnel filled the room in support of Shover's promotion. Shover had started as a part-time basic EMT in April 1995, received her paramedic certification in 1998 and became full time in January 2003. She volunteered and received SWAT medic training in 2004 and has served as a member of the police department's special response team. She's been shift officer-in-charge since Februrary 2012. With …

Roy Batista appointed as interim director; council committee to begin interviews of 16 applicants for new, full-time post.
A former North Canton law director has been appointed to serve in that position again – but only on a temporary basis until the city hires its first-ever full-time law director. During a special City Council meeting Wednesday, Roy H. Batista was appointed to serve as interim law director for up to 61 days. He will be paid $120 per hour for daytime work and $90 an hour for evening meeting attendance. Council President Jon Snyder said city officials reached out to Batista to fill the gap between the resignation of part-time law director Hans Nilges, whose last day on the job was July 31, and the hiring of the city’s first full-time attorney. Batista, a North Canton resident since 1968, served as the city’s law director for more than 25 years…

His name may sound a little familiar to our Patch readers. Brent Fatzinger — he recently stepped into the role of president of the North Canton Rotary Club and has chaired the committee that puts on the annual Chili Open Golf Classic at the Fairways at Arrowhead. He's also talked to North Canton Patch before about the Rotary's Bitzer Park amphitheater project. Now's your chance to learn a little more about Fatzinger in this new North Canton Patch feature, "Names in the News." North Canton Patch: What motivated you to get involved in the Rotary Club? Fatzinger: Ironically what got me involved with Rotary was simply someone asking me to join. I knew of Rotary from my experience in high school with exchange students. My sister was also an …

Hans Nilges, who's been the city's law director since December 2009, attended his last North Canton City Council meeting as a city employee Monday night
Law Director Hans Nilges attended his final meeting as a North Canton city employee Monday night. Nilges, who's been law director for about two and a half years, said his goodbyes as he prepares for his final day on the job July 31. The employment attorney filed his letter of resignation June 29. "It has been a privilege and an honor to have worked with each of you. This was never something I thought, in my career, that I would end up doing. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how it happened," Nilges said with a smile. "It was a great privilege to serve the city of North Canton and I thank you for that opportunity." Council President Jon Snyder had announced Nilges' resignation at the July 2 council meeting, according to the Canton …

Mike Gallina, superintendent for eight years, sat down with North Canton Patch one last time to talk about what he loves about the community and what changes are coming his way
When Mike Gallina became the superintendent of North Canton City Schools, the title of “superintendent” lasted a short 90 seconds. “After that, it’s a relationship,” he said. “And I’ve so appreciated the relationship that North Canton has had with its schools.” Gallina — who’s been known to attend all the district’s important sporting events and banquets, and take the time to know the students, staff and parents — is bidding the district a farewell this month as he completes his eighth year as superintendent of North Canton City Schools. He begins a new position with the AultCare Health Network as the new director of outreach and organizational development starting in August. He is replaced by Michael Hartenstein, assistant superintendent …

"I not only was lucky enough to get a job, but I’ve been lucky enough to have my career here,” Hall told North Canton Patch
Tell Hall is wrapping up a lengthy career in education that’s taken him everywhere from substitute teaching to the head of Hoover High’s audio-visual department to the associate principal of Hoover High. Where he spent the last leg of his journey, though, was inside the Mary L. Evans Early Childhood Center. Hall, husband to Becky and father to Pete Hall (’05 Hoover grad), talked recently with North Canton Patch about ending his career in education at a place where students are just beginning their education. “It’s been ironic. It’s been unique. It’s just been fun,” Hall said. LAST CLASS IN THE KINDERGARTEN CENTER The class of 2024 is the final class to pass through the kindergarten center as the district begins all-day, everyday …

The North Canton resident and Hoover High grad will lead the girls basketball team, replacing Tim Vick as head coach
The Hoover High girls basketball team now has one of its own in the driver’s seat — Abbey (Moore) Allerding of North Canton. The Hoover High grad just landed the position of varsity coach. Her Viking roots set her apart from the rest of the candidates who vied to fill the position, which opened when Tim Vick resigned last month. “What stood out for us more than anything was that she was a Hoover kid and it was a great opportunity for her to come home,” Athletic Director Don Shimek said. Allerding took a few minutes to talk to North Canton Patch this week about coming back to her alma mater and her expectations for her first year coaching at Hoover High. North Canton Patch: Tell me about your coaching and basketball experience. Abbey …

Christina Weyrick-Cooper will begin a marketing position with the North Canton Public Library after a successful stint with the North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce
A few parties will benefit from Christina Weyrick-Cooper's change of employment. She will soon begin a full-time marketing position at the North Canton Public Library. The staff there gets the outreach expertise of the woman behind events like North Canton Gone Mad. Even her former employer, the North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce, finds a silver lining in Weyrick-Cooper's departure. "With the library being a chamber member, she'll continue helping us as a volunteer," Chamber President Doug Lane said. "We're not losing her totally. We'll be able to call upon her (for support)." Wednesday was Weyrick-Cooper's last day as the chamber's outreach manager. Lane said she helped boost attendance at meetings in the past year and increased the …

Mayor David Held gave the State of the City Address Wednesday night and focused on what it will take for the city to bounce back after the loss of the Hoover Company
Still on the rebound from losing the Hoover Company in 2008, the city of North Canton has focused its attention on maintaining a lean government and, of course, building up the Hoover District with more jobs. Mayor David Held went over those points and more at Wednesday night's State of the City Address inside Walsh University's Barrette Business & Community Center. Although the loss of the Hoover Company was a massive blow to the city, Held was unwavering in his message: North Canton is on its way back up. And that, he said, is because of the hard work of those working in the city. "It's not just one person; it's the state, it's the grants, it's the economic development director. It's the engineer and our city administrator. There are so …
