Memorial Stadium Vandalism Spree is Costly

Police continue their investigation of break-in, vandalism and thefts that occurred in mid-November at North Canton City Schools' sports complex.

A mid-November break-in and vandalism spree at Memorial Stadium resulted in about $5,000 in damages and thefts, according to a recently released North Canton Police report. Chief Stephan Wilder said Monday police are continuing their investigation of the incident that occurred sometime between 2 p.m. Nov. 16 and 1:28 p.m. Nov. 18 at the North Canton City School District’s sports complex at 417 Wise Ave. N.E. One or more suspects broke into and vandalized the football locker room, the soccer concession stand, soccer press box and damaged the soccer field itself. School Board to Consider $19,000 LED Scoreboard: On the Agenda

The North Canton City Schools Board of Education members will consider an LED graphics board for the scoreboard at Memorial Stadium and other agenda items when they meet this evening

North Canton Memorial Stadium could get the "wow" factor if the school board approves the installation of an LED graphics board for the scoreboard. The North Canton City Schools Board of Education is set to meet at 5:30 p.m. today in the Hoover High Media Center and discuss the graphics board installation as well as the installation of a new speaker for the stadium. The LED graphics board would be installed by Adams Signs at a cost not to exceed $19,000, paid from the district's cell tower account. And Staley Technologies would install the speaker, also covered by the district's cell tower account. The speaker would cost no more than $20,000. Also on the agenda is the acceptance of a gift — a TV news and weather set donated from Chennel 5 …

Jaycees Keep July 4 Fireworks Tradition Going Strong

Suarez Corp. Industries co-sponsored this year's annual Celebration in the Park and fireworks, while Sam's Club also came forward as a sponsor.

Last year the North Canton Jaycees were scrambling to find a community co-sponsor for the annual Celebration in the Park and July 4 fireworks, and had to tell community members the festivities might not go on. Well, not this year. Suarez Corp. Industries, which manufactures the EdenPURE heaters inside the Hoover District since September 2011, stepped forward to co-sponsor both the fireworks and the celebration, which begins at 6 p.m. that day. Sam's Club also chimed in to sponsor the event. “We are very excited to have SCI as the co-sponsor of the 2012 North Canton Jaycees and Suarez Corporation Industries Celebration in the Park," said Jamie McCleaster, public relations director for the North Canton Jaycees.  "When initially looking for a…

Yeah, you sure did! She's been there every night. And is having a ball! Brings back memories of when I was that age and when the Fair was on the triangle of Hillcrest, Portage and Charlotte Streets ... back in the Good Ole' Daze!   more ›

WATCH: Community Comes Together for Viking Victory Run

The Viking Victory Run, Community 5K and Kids Fun Run exceeded organizers' expectations by bringing in about $16,500 — more than twice what they expected to raise

Sunday's Viking Victory Run was such a success, organizers already are thinking ahead to next year's event. This weekend's 5k and kids fun run kicked off at Hoover High School and Memorial Stadium and raised about $16,500 for the elementary schools. Not only that, but organizer Todd Davy said it accomplished another goal: It brought the North Canton community closer together as it works to realign its school buildings for the 2012-2013 school year. "Our original goal was to give something back to the schools," Davy said. "We wanted to encourage our kids to be fit. We wanted to get our families out running. And we wanted to unite the four elementary schools as we transition into next year." Davy said he's pleased with the response from the …

Business Students Give Back to Community Through Framed Photo Sales

Hoover High students in Kim Nidy's business management class are selling framed photos of Don Hertler Sr. field at Memorial Stadium not just for their profit, but to benefit the Memorial Stadium Improvement Campaign

The students in Kim Nidy’s business management class are at it again. For the next several weeks they’ll have one thing on their minds: selling a product that’s been years in the making. The Hoover High students start off in a general business course that teaches them the basics of business, and they work their way up to the business management where they, now seniors, operate the business Viking Enterprises. And this year, one Viking Enterprises team is determined to sell at least 100 framed photographs of Don Hertler Sr. Field at Memorial Stadium, which was improved in 2011 with new artificial turf. Ten percent of sales go to the Memorial Stadium Improvement Campaign. “There was a need for money, and we were looking at the charitable …

Student Shoutout: Katie Eastman's Artwork Inspires From Inside Hoover High

Eastman, a '10 Hoover High grad and Ohio University sophomore, created artwork that takes her back to Memorial Stadium. The drawings now hang inside Hoover High.

How does a runner forget the feeling of laying a foot into the starting block? Or the anticipation before the gun sounds? How about a cheerleader, that feeling in the glow of the Friday night lights? 2010 Hoover High grad Katie Eastman knows she never will. Eastman, 19, now a sophomore at Ohio University, still has those pangs of nostalgia that take her back to Memorial Stadium, where she ran track and cheered on her fellow Vikings. Her love for her alma mater led her to create a couple pieces of stadium-inspired artwork that now hang inside Hoover High near the main entrance. “I love Hoover High, and that track is where I spent a lot of my time,” Eastman told North Canton Patch. “Just being on that track, and the Friday night lights, and …
