Entryway Signs on Their Way: Pic of the Day

The city started installing its new entryway signs today. The signs will greet pedestrians and motorists as they travel the city's main corridors.

Just a few weeks after the city settled on which entryway sign it liked, it's already installing them all around town. Councilman Mark Cerreta sent in this photo of an entryway sign going in near North Main Street and Orion Street in North Canton today.  It's one of two being installed now, although Cerreta said we'll have to wait a few weeks to see the post's top piece installed. Cerreta, who spearheaded the entryway signs project, has worked to gather community members' input about what they would like to see. (That included taking into account Patch readers' opinions in this online survey.) The end an amalgamation of several things the public liked about three different entryway sign options — the brick column that represents …

On the Agenda: Graffiti, City Signage & Rezoning at Tonight's Council Meeting

Check out what's in store for tonight's North Canton City Council meeting

Last week, North Canton City Council discussed an ordinance that would allow the city to punish business owners who don't clean up the graffiti in a timely manner. But, what's timely, exactly? We're expected to learn more at tonight's meeting inside North Canton City Council Chambers as members have their first reading for the proposed ordinance. Council will meet at 7 p.m. In the meantime, you can learn more by checking out our coverage of last week's meeting. Also on tonight's agenda:  Interested in what else is happening tonight? Construction for Bitzer Park Amphitheater to Start in Spring 2013

We checked in with the North Canton Rotary Club this week to see what the status of the Bitzer Park amphitheater is

If all goes as planned, we may be seeing an amphitheater in Bitzer Park during the Main Street Festival in 2013. Construction is likely to start next spring, said Brent Fatzinger, incoming North Canton Rotary Club president. The Rotary Club spearheaded the project, which is just one of the many city-wide improvements in the newly unveiled Master Plan. The group had originally wanted the project to be completed in time for this year's Main Street Festival. But, after hitting some bumps in the road with construction plans, they decided next year is a much more likely bet. "The last thing we want to have happen is we rush into something like this and miss something or overlook something that would have been a benefit," Fatzinger said. The …

Hopefully someone will be able to contact whoever the owner is of the adjacent parking lot so that it can be used for activities at Bitzer Park. We have a great monument there. Do you know how HARD it is to take an elderly person there to let them look at the plaques of their loved ones. You can't stop on Main or East Maple to let them out of your car. You must park at the Y and have them walk to…   more ›

Chili Open Golf Classic to Raise Money For Bitzer Park Amphitheater

The Rotary Chili Open beckons golfers to the Fairways Golf Course this Saturday for a day of snowy sportsmanship

Last week we heard that a civic group already was interested in undertaking the amphitheater at North Canton's Bitzer Park — just one of the many city-wide improvements in the newly unveiled Master Plan. Bill Strohmenger, chairman of the Master Plan steering committee, hadn't revealed which organization it was when he detailed the plan at Walsh University last Wednesday. But we found'em. The Rotary Club of North Canton will use the money it raises from this weekend's Rotary Chili Open to help create an outdoor amphitheater for city residents to enjoy during the summer months, and especially during the popular Main Street Festival in August. "It's something we had act talked about before anybody in our club even knew what was going to be in…

Master Plan Organizers: Now We Need to Take Action

The city's Master Plan is finalized and now city officials and residents need to act on it to start improving North Canton

The next steps after unveiling the city's Master Plan is to give the document teeth and ensure city officials and citizens alike take action to follow through with what's in the plan. The North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce spearheaded the plan, which started coming together in July. That's when residents and city stakeholders met for the first time to brainstorm improvements to the city. Two similar meetings followed — one in September in which participants homed in on specific areas of concern, and another in November, when participants saw their ideas start to take shape through vibrant mock-ups. Throughout the process, participants were guided by designers from the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC). Bill Strohmenger, …

Thoughts From The Editor

City Should See Finalized Master Plan by Jan. 1

I attended the city's third and final Master Plan meeting Wednesday night and heard lots of solid ideas to make the city better. Read my firsthand account and join the discussion: What would you do to improve North Canton?

It seems no one’s afraid to admit it: North Canton could definitely be improved. From its sidewalks, signage, parking (or lack thereof), its overall identity and the businesses located downtown, there’s an endless amount of ways to make the city better. And residents and community stakeholders were tasked with just that: Put your heads together and come up with some solid, plausible ways to improve. Those improvements would be wrapped up in one cohesive plan — the North Canton Master Plan. The community held its third and final master plan meeting Wednesday night at Walsh University’s Barrette Business & Community Center. I attended as a quiet observer and listened as experts from the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC) walked …

I can't say there's really anything in the CUDC's proposal that I don't like. Most important to me personally are slowing down traffic in the downtown area and bringing in a natural foods store (and other retail) that is walkable from downtown. I'd love to see more uniformity - kind of like you see when you go into Broadview Heights or Hudson, where you know you'd entered a specific area (and it'…   more ›

Council at Large Candidates Discuss Jobs, Fairways Golf Course at Forum

All five candidates running for North Canton City Council at Large attended the forum Wednesday night at the Fairways of North Canton and answered questions submitted by the audience

All five candidates running for North Canton City Council at Large attended a candidates forum at the Fairways golf club Wednesday night. They answered questions about Issue 2 (see this update featuring video statements from each candidate), increasing the number of jobs in North Canton and the possibility of entering into a joint economic development agreement with nearby townships. They also discussed the Fairways golf course, which is owned by the city, and whether they would like to see it developed in the future. Voters will vote for three of the five candidates. The Stark County League of Women Voters hosted the event, while Attorney Richard Kuhn moderated. About 25 people attended. MARK CERRETA Bio Blast: Grew up in North Canton; …

I am disappointed in all of the candidates comments concerning the Fairways golf course land. When the city first purchased the course for a much too high price I pointed out that the land wasn't suited for a golf course but was ideally suited to be a park for all to enjoy. The possibilities for the land use as a park are limitless. Walking paths, altheletic fields, arboreums, nature preserve in …   more ›

A Chorus for a Cause to Debut Children's, Youth and Hand Bell Choirs Saturday

Joan Ferris, A Chorus for a Cause member and North Canton resident, reminded North Canton City Council Monday night that they could attend the weekend event

Joan Ferris couldn’t pass up the opportunity to remind the community about this Saturday’s debut of the A Chorus for a Cause children’s, youth and handbell choirs. All three will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Hoover High School, benefiting the local Special Olympics, Ferris said at Monday night’s North Canton City Council meeting. Ferris, a North Canton resident, urged everyone there that night to attend. She said the original A Chorus for a Cause group has been around for about two years, and it’s not quite up to the membership numbers they'd like. Nevertheless, the group has been performing two shows each year, with one group or organization benefiting from the proceeds each time. That includes the American Heart Association, Juvenile Diabetes…

City's Master Plan Website Goes Live

The North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce announced today that the site is ready and has info from the city's first Master Plan meeting

The city's Master Plan website, which features information about the strategic planning process to identify new opportunities for city development and improvements, is up and running. The city of North Canton, in cooperation with the North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce, spearheaded the Master Plan and just launched the site. According to a news release from the Chamber, visitors will find a recap of the first public meeting from July 21. The summary includes a list of points of pride, identified problems, identity and characteristics of the city and desired development features, including thoughts such as “vacant structures are visible, but arts are invisible, so why not combine the two?” Upcoming public meetings: The Master Plan was…
