Students Affected by Hurricane Sandy Say 'Thanks' After Receiving $6,000 Donation from Hoover, Jackson

Cheerleaders from Hoover and Jackson high schools raised $6,000 for students at Long Beach School District after Hurricane Sandy devastated the area

Leonetti wrote the story after the district received a $6,000 donation from Hoover High and Jackson High School cheerleaders. (Read more about how the students raised the money here.)   When the cheerleaders of Jackson High School in Massilion, Ohio saw the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, they were moved to take action. They were particularly struck by the fact that the Long Beach School District, located on a barrier island off the coast of Long Island, lost five of their six gymnasiums. Hoover, Jackson Cheerleaders Raise $5,000 for Students Affected by Hurricane Sandy

The students used their longstanding school rivalry to help others

Hoover and Jackson high schools turned their longstanding rivalry into something great when the schools' cheerleaders teamed up to raise money for Hurricane Sandy victims. The two schools competed to see who could raise money the most money for Hurricane Sandy victims who attend Long Beach High School in Lido Beach, NY. Hoover High School raised $2,855 ($855 over its projected goal), and Jackson High School raised $2,767.96 for a total of $5,622.96 The Hoover High cheerleaders were victorious, but they won't let that go to their heads. The rivalry was all in good fun, and the teams were happy to help their peers, said English teacher Tiffany Walker, who also serves as varsity cheerleading adviser. LOOK: Hoover's Sydney Lautzenheiser Second Fastest Stark County Runner at State Meet

Hoover High's Sydney Lautzenheiser finished 48th in the girls Division I race at the state cross country championships Saturday in Hebron with a time of 19:00:24. Lautzenheiser was the second fastest Stark County runner in the race. North Canton Patch viewer Earle E. Wise Jr. was on hand at the race and submitted several photos this weekend in our Pics & Clips gallery, which you can now find in this update. Jody Musser of Jackson High School finished 27th with a time of 18:42:58. Jackson finished 10th in the team race. Looking for more coverage of the cross country meet? Zoup! Hosts Hoover High Fundraiser Today

The restaurant hosts the fundraiser one day before its grand opening near The Strip in Jackson Township

Zoup! is giving hungry North Canton folks a way to fill up and give back to Hoover High School at the same time. The soup-specializing restaurant will open its doors today (one day before its grand opening) to take part in a fundraiser for both Hoover High School and Jackson High School. The restaurant, at 4898 Portage St. NW, North Canton, welcomes diners from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. today. Supporters of either school can drop their receipt in a designated box and 100 percent of the receipts in each box will be donated to the corresponding school. GlenOak High to Host 5 Minute Film Festival, Reel Awards

Local high school and college film students, including those from North Canton, will showcase their talent in front of the public

Films have the power to educate, inspire, make us laugh or make us cry — and in this case, bring local high school students, local colleges, teachers, business owners and members of  the community together for one memorable evening. Steve Pustay, the video production teacher at GlenOak High School, has always had a love for film and wanted an event that would allow students to creatively express themselves to the public. "I think it's important for our community to see our students take the risk of having the public examine their dreams and imaginations," Pustay said.
