Stark County Passes Sales Tax Increase By Nearly 10,000 Votes

It was a clean sweep for Issue 29, according to unofficial election results

The Stark County Jail may now operate at full capacity after the passage of Issue 29, a county-wide sales tax increase of 0.5 percent. Stark County voters passed the issue with 66,279* votes for it and 52,280 votes against it, according to unofficial election results from the Stark County Board of Elections Tuesday night. The issue saw little opposition from officials in North Canton, as the North Canton Police Department, North Canton City Schools Board of Education and North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce all endorsed it. Police Chief Stephan Wilder expressed his concern at a City Council meeting last month, saying the Stark County Jail would operate at 122 beds for inmates when it once operated at 501. North Canton Chamber Endorses Issue 29 Passage

Chamber President Doug Lane said passage of Issue 29 will help ensure the safety of business members and the community

The North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce has endorsed passage of Issue 29, the half-percent piggyback sales tax. “The Chamber knows our business members and our community need to feel and be safe and the small price, paid by local consumers and out-of-town visitors, will ensure efficient and safe operation of the Stark County Jail as well as continue the excellent work of our state-recognized county judicial system,” said Chamber President Doug Lane following the vote of the Chamber board. The North Canton Chamber joins the Alliance, Canton, Jackson-Belden and Massillon Chambers and the North Canton City Council and North Canton City Schools Board of Education in endorsing passage of the issue. The scare tactics with the Jail.. Will not work and Police Officer's aren't coming back until 2013 anyway... With or without this tax... Nice try... But "NO Raises" for you... Stop with the Scare-Tactics....   more ›

Police Chief: Consider Voting ‘Yes’ on County Sales Tax Increase

The 0.5 percent sales tax increase will be used to maintain criminal justice services like the Stark County Jail

The Stark County Jail may not be able to take on more inmates from North Canton if Issue 29 doesn’t pass, said Police Chief Stephan Wilder at Monday night’s City Council meeting. The jail could go from 501 beds to 122, meaning many people who should be jailed might not be. “When we have a violent offender, there’s no guarantee we’ll be able to book that person into jail,” Wilder said. “We’re summonsing people as much as possible because of the jail population rate.” North Canton City Council members drafted a resolution of support to be sent to the Stark County Commissioners. In it, members say they support Issue 29 because of the decreased revenue in county government and more expected cuts to the jail, courts and prosecutor’s office. …

QUOTE 'County commissioners have placed an eight-year, half-cent sales on the November ballot Issue 29 to avoid more cuts to the jail and to restore its capacity to 501 inmates.' If the County commissioners are worried about jail finances, why don't they just cut back more on their expenses, so that the jail can have enough? That's what they claim the priority is...keeping violent criminals in …   more ›
