The annual art challenge tests local art students' creativity in the name of a good cause.
Hoover High School's artists have done it again. For the second year in a row, a small team of Hoover students won the "Paint Off" held at Diebold's world headquarters in Green last week. Based on the theme of "Art and Technology," the students were given four hours to create a 4'x4' mural to convey their concept, said Hoover art teacher Christopher Triner. After the allotted time, students shared their concept with top executives from the local manufacturer, said Triner. The winning team, comprised of, Hannah Gianfagna, Hannah Cowie, Sheldyn Nicholson, Quyen Duong and Kayli Sommers, claimed a $100 gift certificate for art supplies. Hoover High School is the 58th best high school in Ohio and 1,243th nationally, according to the annual rankings prepared by U.S. News & World Report. There are 242 public high schools in Ohio. The school recieved the silver medal and was praised for its participation rate in Advanced Placement courses. With several shutouts, few errors and solid hitting, the Hoover High varsity baseball team remained undefeated till Monday's 10-6 loss against Wooster.
You can't win 'em all. After a 12-0 start, the Hoover High varsity baseball team lost their first game against Wooster on Monday night, said Vikings head coach Jeff Hite. "We got beat 10-6, our pitching was a little shaky, but hey, that's the game," said Hite. The Vikings remain in first place (6-0) in the Federal League, and despite the loss, Hite and Hoover athletic director Don Shimek couldn't be more pleased with the team's solid showing out of the gate. In their first 13 games, the Vikings have seven shutouts, a collective E.R.A. under one and a .350-plus team batting average, said Hite. Engineering students came in second place in a STEM challenge.
This weekend, Hoover High School engineering students showed off their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills — which led to a $5,000 grant for engineering programs. During Goodyear's Engineering Career Day, students participated in hands-on STEM challenge. Hoover High School raked in enough points to place second in the competition overall. The team was awarded a trophy and a $5,000 grant to be used for the school's engineering programs. The following students participated:

The future Zip, Nyles Evans, signed his letter of intent with Akron Wednesday.
Hoover High School's all-time leading scorer, Nyles Evans, signed his national letter of intent on Wednesday to play basketball at the University of Akron. Evans announced in December he would transfer to Akron from Brevard Community College in Cocoa, Fla., gozips.com reports. Interestingly enough, he's the Zips' first junior college transfer and will have two seasons of eligibility on the court. "We received Nyles' commitment during the school year and he is a player we recruited out of high school," said Akron head coach Kevin Dambrot in a prepared statement. Following an in-depth study of over 22,000 high schools nationwide, Hoover High was handpicked as one of the most challenging in Ohio by the reputable newspaper.
Each year, The Washington Post calculates the academic achievements of over 22,000 high schools nationwide to find out which are the most challenging. 91 percent of the schools under review didn't make the cut; fortunately, Hoover High School wasn't in the majority, the Post reported April 12. Hoover was ranked 22nd in the top 32 most challenging schools in Ohio, based on total student participation in highly rigorous, college-preparatory coursework and exams. 500 gymnasts, 300 volunteers and scores of spectators will convene at Hoover High School this weekend for the 2013 YMCA "In10sity" regional championship.
Roughly 500 gymnasts representing YMCA teams from Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio will descend upon Hoover High School this weekend for the 2013 "In10sity" regional championship. The two-day tournament will feature mid-level to highly skilled gymnasts that will compete in four events: bars, beam, floor exercises and vault, said YMCA Communications and Marketing Director Kathy Yaros. 27 teams will face off in the event, including the North Canton Y Team, led by head coach Jennifer Anderson. The local team is comprised of 65 gymnasts — including top-ranked Hoover High sophomore Kathleen Shier — that will represent virtually every high school in the Stark County area, said Anderson. “This event is really a very big deal for us,” she said. Journalists from Hoover High School traveled to Kent State last Friday for the annual Ohio Scholastic Media Association's convention.
Hoover High School's The Viking Views newsmagazine took home a second place award and 71 students received individual awards April 5 from the Ohio Scholastic Media Association. The awards were handed out at the sixth-annual Ohio Scholastic Media Association state conference April 5 at Kent State University. Newspaper, yearbook, broadcast and video productions students earned a total of 18 Superior rankings, 28 Excellent and 25 Honorable Mentions for work that had been submitted in various individual and team advance contests. Student loses control Police were called to Hoover High School March 22 at 12:12 p.m. after an unruly student caused "inconvenience, annoyance and alarm" during class, according to a police report. Classmates of the 17-year-old student reportedly feared for their safety as the teenager used vulgar language to challenge and intimidate his teacher. The boy was cited for disorderly conduct and minor menacing, both fourth-degree misdemeanors. Where's your doctor's note?
