Hoover had St. V-M on its toes after one quarter, leading 21-15
A strong effort by the Hoover High boys basketball team wasn't enough to pull out a win over the St. Vincent-St. Mary team Tuesday night. The Vikings lost 79-71. Some highlights? Hoover led after the first quarter, 21-15, and senior forward Harrison Blackledge scored 11 fourth-quarter points, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Dom Iero led Hoover with 22 points and Blackledge 21. “I was proud of our effort,” coach Randy Montgomery told the Beacon. “I felt like it was a good game for us to play because it was kind of a physical game. We didn’t rebound as well as we needed to.” Hoover now stands 18-4 this season. The Vikings will end their season Feb. 26 with a game against Louisville at Alliance High School, according to hooverhoops.com…

It's the 10-year anniversary of the school's one and only state championship win in girls basketball, and the booster club has brought the team together to relive the special night
Only one group of Hoover High athletes has ever managed to bring home the girls basketball state championship, and those same athletes get the chance to relive that moment when they reunite on the court next month. The Lady Vikings Basketball Booster Club will bring the women back to their alma mater Dec. 8 to honor them and their coaches for the 10-year anniversary of their win. "It's a great honor being a state champion; obviously we would hope it would inspire the girls currently in the program," said Booster Club President Geoff Stroemple. "We know they work hard but they can see tangible proof there — they are the ones who won it." Expect a few surprises that night, Stroemple said. "We have some surprises for the 2002 team coming back…

Coach Ray Swope was instrumental in Hoover High's successful run to a state title
This weekend, new Ohio high school boys' basketball champions will be crowned in Columbus. In 1939, All-Ohioan Roy Mohler's free throw in the final two minutes led North Canton High School to a 24-23 win over Sandusky St. Mary and the Class B State Championship and NoCaHi's place in Ohio high school basketball immortality. North Canton's 1938-39 season got off to a disappointing 1-4 start. There are often defining moments in the course of a team's season, and for Coach Ray Swope and his team, theirs came on Monday following the last loss. Swope's son Ray "Bud" Swope Jr. recounted that night of practice at the high school gym on Charlotte Street when the team was instructed not to suit up. "Dad told the team that he saw the potential of …

Coach Tim Vick said players must work on defense and intensity to keep winning games
The Hoover Lady Vikings basketball team members literally wear their team goal on the back of their right shoulder in black marker — the number 32 — which represents the quest to play hard the entire 32 minutes of a basketball game. Monday night, the Lady Vikings accomplished that goal for at least the first half as they were en route to an easy 72-53 victory over the Thomas Worthington Lady Cardinals (6-2). The game kicked off the first night of the Lady Vikes Holiday Classic at the Hoover High School gymnasium. "We have struggled with maintaining intensity in games since this summer and tonight was no different," said first-year head coach Tim Vick. "I felt we were not mentally ready to play and we were not good defensively." But, …
