If you ask Mary Lynne Zahler about her husband Gary, she’ll probably tell you he is “the best ever.” But she won’t stop there. He’s a wonderful father to their 4-year-old daughter Ava, a dedicated caseworker at the County of Summit Developmental Disabilities Board, a supporter of the American Heart Association, the best cook and a loyal husband who helps her at her job at Akron Children’s Hospital. Those are just a few (OK, more than a few) reasons Mary nominated her husband Gary for North Canton Patch’s Greatest Person feature. We’ll let Mary tell you more. “The kindest and most tender thing he does is something very few people know about,” Mary wrote to us in her nomination letter. “We always have rescued animals and we have two rescued …

The career path Tim Novelli has chosen connects him with Olympians, actors and young North Canton athletes (something he can relate to, having been one). But would you have guessed that career path is chiropractic care? Novelli, of Novelli Chiropractic Clinic in North Canton, didn't choose the career for the excitement of who he can meet and where he can go, but because of the experience he had when he was treated by a chiropractor. And since earning his license, he's given back to the community in countless ways. Patch viewer Nicole Erhard knows well Novelli's giving nature and nominated him for North Canton Patch’s “Greatest Person” feature. Novelli had treated her father and “saved his life,” Erhard said. “I am indebted to him,” she …

December marks the last month Jennifer Reider will be a member of the North Canton Jaycees, as she transitions out of the group for those 18 to 41 years old. Reider describes her upcoming departure as bittersweet. "I was at the egg hunt and I kind of stepped back and thought 'Wow, I'm kind of done!'" she said. "But it’s so great we have such amazing new people who have joined in the last year or two. It’s definitely a good time for me to back away and let them go on in do great things here too.” Reider, chairman of the board for North Canton Jaycees and teacher at Faith Friends Preschool, joined the North Canton Jaycees in 2005 after seeing a story in Our Town newspaper that talked about low membership numbers and how that would affect the…

We're looking for North Canton residents who are making a difference in their communities and beyond
At Patch, we like to support positive role models in the community. We want to find those North Canton residents who are doing great things in the community and shine a light on their good deeds. You know, those ordinary and extraordinary people whose acts of courage, determination, volunteerism and compassion have made a difference in the community and beyond. It's part of a Patch-wide project called the "Greatest Person of the Day," which is being done in cooperation with our sister publication, the Huffington Post. (North Canton resident Rebecca Tolson made it onto the Huffington Post this past January for her work with dyslexic children.) So, think ordinary people doing extraordinary things for friends, families, groups and others — …

Rebecca Tolson is in the spotlight as Huffington Post's Greatest Person of the Day today for authoring and advocating for a bill to bring dyslexia specialists into Ohio schools
Rebecca Tolson, a North Canton resident and a certified academic language therapist, is in the spotlight again. This time, our 2011 North Canton Person of the Year takes center stage today as Huffington Post's Greatest Person of the Day. Tolson authored House Bill 157, which encourages Ohio's Educational Service Centers to hire dyslexia specialists who will provide training for K-4 teachers to help those teachers work with dyslexic children. The bill passed through the Ohio General Assembly in December with resounding support. You can find Tolson featured as our North Canton Person of the Year in this story and the link to the Huffington Post Greatest Person of the Day feature by following this link.

After giving birth to two premature babies, Linsey Morgan knows all too well the feeling of uncertainty during pregnancy. She understands the emotions mothers go through when they hear that word: premature. And she knows giving birth to a premature baby has an effect on the mother that never will go away. “People say they that they grow out of being premature, but there’s always that scar there, either with the mother, or the baby has a physical problem and it’s never addressed.” For those reasons, Morgan volunteers with the March of Dimes, a national prematurity awareness organization that promotes healthy pregnancies, and speaks out for babies born premature. She talks with mothers who may be going through the same things she’s …

What is written here does not even scratch the surface.
