Better yet, I wonder if the thieves had to under go a background check for that gun they took posetion of or if it could end up surfacing at a crime scene somewhere down the road. We need more gun control, right?   more ›

Graffiti Artists Find Outlet at Zepp's Pizza

The local pizza parlor will hold a graffiti art competition on April 21.

Later this month, Zepp's Pizza will host an inaugural graffiti competition to give local artists a fun and legal outlet to promote their work. Hoover, Glen Oak, McKinley and Timken High School art teachers have received an invitation with the hope that each school is represented in the event, according to co-organizer and Flynn Marketing owner Alyson Flynn.  Mohler Lumber is building plywood boards that will act as canvasses. Only five applicants will be selected. Entrants are asked to submit an entry form and a design to Zepp's by April 10. The public is invited as well, and pizza, salads and drinks — along with Honey Bees Sweet Treats cupcakes — will be on sale during the event, said Flynn. There also will be a DJ and music to give the …

Council Removes Civil Penalty From Proposed Graffiti Ordinance

Council members agreed to remove the civil penalty from their proposed graffiti ordinance Monday night. That means there is now no penalty for business owners who don't remove graffiti from their buildings.

It started off as a criminal offense. Then went to a civil offense. Now no offense. North Canton City Council members still are tweaking their proposed graffiti ordinance that aimed to punish business owners who dawdled on removing graffiti from their businesses. And at Monday night's council meeting they discussed removing the penalty altogether. Council-at-large Dan Griffith — also chairman of the Ordinance, Rules and Claims Committee — said the amended ordinance alleviates valid concerns citizens and council members had with the first draft. He handed the floor over to Law Director Tim Fox, who helped craft the proposed ordinance. "Specifically, what I wanted to make sure we incorporated in here was the intent of what was discussed at …

Congratulations to our elected officials for finally presenting an option to address the grafitti problem that doesn't unduly punish victims of a crime. Some communities across the country have formed citizen committees to help property owners who are unable to remove grafitti from their property. Perhaps our civic leaders might be interested in exploring such an option.   more ›

LOOK: Your City Officials Attack Graffiti at Fred Astaire Dance Studio

Which graffiti remover works best? North Canton City Council members and the city's superintendent of permits and inspection were determined to find that out this weekend.

North Canton City Council members have been mulling over how to deal with graffiti in the city this year as the unsightly artwork continues to pop up on Dumpsters, park buildings and businesses. They've recently discussed an ordinance that would slap the wrists of business owners who dawdle on cleaning graffiti from their buildings. The proposed ordinance, which has been tabled since June, would require business owners to remove the graffiti within a certain time frame or else face punishment from the city (city officials are leaning toward a civil offense). Council members had also talked about which graffiti removers might work best and whether the city should buy the removers and sell them to business owners at cost. And on Saturday …

On the Agenda: Council to Re-examine Graffiti Ordinance

North Canton City Council returns from its summer break ready to tackle an ordinance that would punish business owners who drag their feet on removing graffiti from their buildings

North Canton City Council members will return from their summer break and meet at 7 p.m. tonight in North Canton Council Chambers for a meeting of the whole. On the agenda for the night is discussion about a graffiti ordinance that was tabled in June. Council had discussed punishing business owners who dawdle on cleaning up graffiti on their buildings. Council had talked at its June 18 meeting about whether the time frame should be two weeks or a month and what the penalty should be (as written, it was a first-degree misdemeanor, while the act of vandalism or criminal damaging is often a less severe second-degree misdemeanor). Before the 7 p.m. meeting, council members will meet at 6:30 p.m. and move into executive session to discuss …

Council Tables Graffiti Ordinance that Would Crack Down on Dawdling Business Owners

Council chose not to move forward with an ordinance that would penalize business owners who leave graffiti on their buildings for an excessive amount of time

Business owners whose buildings get tagged with graffiti can breathe a sign of relief — for now. North Canton City Council has decided to table an ordinance that would slap the wrists of business owners who don't clean up graffiti in a timely manner. Council had talked at its June 18 meeting about whether the time frame should be two weeks or a month and what the penalty should be (as written, it was a first-degree misdemeanor, while the act of vandalism or criminal damaging is often a less severe second-degree misdemeanor). Doug Lane, president of the North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce, spoke about the proposed ordinance at the North Canton City Council meeting Monday night. He said it can be difficult for business owners to remove …

City Discusses Punishing Business Owners Who Don't Clean Up Graffiti

City council discussed cracking down on business owners who leave graffiti on their buildings for too long

So, how long is too long to leave graffiti on a building for all to see? Fourteen days? Thirty days? North Canton City Council members gave it some discussion at Monday night's meeting, saying they're tired of seeing business owners drag their feet when it comes to cleaning up their graffiti-tagged buildings. Council discussed a proposed ordinance that would require business owners to remove the graffiti within a certain amount of time. Some agreed 14 days was plenty of time, while others thought 30 days was more reasonable. "I think this is absolutely needed," said Councilman Jeff Peters, Ward 2.
