This year's girls and boys basketball players are getting some limelight on North Canton Patch this week, after a Patch user uploaded dozens of game shots to the website
Hoover High athletes are once again in the spotlight on North Canton Patch, as one user uploaded dozens of recent game shots to the Pics & Clips gallery. The Lady Vikings had beat Perry High School last Saturday, while the boys basketball team brought in a win over Bishop Kearny (from New York) at a Walsh University, and Patch viewer Earle E. Wise Jr. was there to see it happen. We've featured just a handful of recent photos from Wise in this post, but you can find tons more in our Pics & Clips gallery. And remember, the Pics & Clips gallery is a great place to upload your photos and videos from around town, pics of school events and anything else that says "North Canton."

Lady Vikings battle back in fourth quarter
Despite a 15-4 run by the freshman Lady Vikings in the fourth quarter, the Lake Lady Blue Streaks pulled out a 45-37 victory Wednesday night at the Lake Community Center Field House. Coach Tim Casper felt his team's slow start in the ballgame was too much to overcome. "When you have to fight back from being down 11-0 early, you just eventually run out of gas," Casper said. "We struggle to score points as it is and cannot afford slow starts like tonight." Lake's post player duo of Taylor Andreff and Lexi Gower combined for 16 points in the first half in helping Lake gain a 28-14 lead at halftime. Hoover could get the deficit no closer than 10 points in the third quarter and Lake eventually extended its lead to 19 points after three periods…

New column will offer a varied look at the North Canton sports scene
Sports is an integral part of the community. It can be reported by covering a game or function. People involved in the sports scene can also be profiled in-depth. This column offers information about sports-related happenings that fall somewhere in between. Laura Wheeler is one of seven seniors on Hoover High School's varsity girls' team this season, but she is a relative newcomer to the program. After playing through her middle school years, a serious back injury cost Wheeler her freshman season of basketball. Wheeler played the last two seasons in the YMCA program and decided to return to the Hoover program for her senior year and have some fun. The 6-foot-1 Wheeler has made important contributions to help the Lady Vikings off to a 7-2 …

Both squads took advantage of early leads
The 7th and 8th grade Hoover Orange teams both achieved a rarity in basketball — holding their opponent scoreless in the first period — en route to lopsided wins Thursday night over Federal League rival Perry Gold at the North Canton Middle School gymnasium. The 7th grade Lady Vikings won 34-17 and got things started with an impressive 18-0 lead after one quarter behind Lexi Manos’ 13 points and a tenacious defense forcing Perry into a whopping 16 turnovers. Perry would not register points on the scoreboard until the 4:12 mark in the second period, when Taylor Howard made a driving layup. Perry trailed 23-3 at halftime and both teams spent the entire second half substituting freely. Other top scorers for the Lady Vikings were Kierra …

Kyle Siber leads the way with 19 points and nine rebounds
Hoover’s 7th grade Black fought off several small rallies by Perry Black to defeat the Panthers 52-39 Wednesday night at the North Canton Middle School gymnasium. Perry’s Alex Volpe scored on a layup with 4:57 to play in the game to cut the Vikings’ advantage to 38-29. However, Hoover’s Kyle Siber’s offensive rebound and score off a missed free throw a short time later would push Hoover’s lead back to 14 and the Vikings were never challenged again. The Vikings displayed balanced scoring both in the paint and from the perimeter. Besides 19 points from the 6-foot Siber, forwards Matt Hilinski and Steven Shimko each scored nine points. Meanwhile, guard Cameron Mayle added eight points including two 3-pointers. Perry had two players in double…

Hoover poised for upcoming Federal League schedule starting next week
A combination of solid performances by two seniors named Hannah and a deep bench proved the difference Tuesday night as the Hoover Lady Vikings defeated Canfield 60-43 in the finale of the Lady Vikes Holiday Classic. The win brings the Lady Vikings' season record to 6-1. Point guard Hannah Romano scored 15 points to lead all scorers and caused havoc on defense with four steals. She forced a couple more turnovers to pressure Canfield guards. Forward Hannah Roan came off the bench to spark the Lady Vikings with 10 points, including three 3-pointers. The Hoover bench outscored Canfield's reserves 21 to four to thwart any small runs Canfield had during the game. "We played a lot harder tonight than last night," Romano said. "We need to keep …

Coach Tim Vick said players must work on defense and intensity to keep winning games
The Hoover Lady Vikings basketball team members literally wear their team goal on the back of their right shoulder in black marker — the number 32 — which represents the quest to play hard the entire 32 minutes of a basketball game. Monday night, the Lady Vikings accomplished that goal for at least the first half as they were en route to an easy 72-53 victory over the Thomas Worthington Lady Cardinals (6-2). The game kicked off the first night of the Lady Vikes Holiday Classic at the Hoover High School gymnasium. "We have struggled with maintaining intensity in games since this summer and tonight was no different," said first-year head coach Tim Vick. "I felt we were not mentally ready to play and we were not good defensively." But, …

Tim Vick comes to Hoover High after successful three-year run at Fairless
The hiring of Tim Vick as the new Hoover High School girls basketball coach — or any varsity coach, for that matter — is big news. But it's bigger still when you consider this: Vick must fill the shoes of Paul Wackerly, who coached the team for 14 years, won a state title and went to the regional tournament five times. "I was always looking for the right circumstance to coach girls basketball again," Vick said. "Hoover is a special coaching job with a rich tradition, and I enjoy how coachable girls are." After a successful three-year run at Navarre's Fairless High School, including a regional tournament appearance by the Falcons in 2005, Vick left girls basketball to coach boys hoops, acting as assistant coach at Fairless, Waynedale and …
