Hoover High Cheerleaders Helping Hurricane Victims

'2-Day Raise' designed to collect funds for displaced high schoolers in Lido Beach, NY.

Hoover High School’s 27 freshmen, junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders are teaming up this week to raise money for Hurricane Sandy victims who attend Long Beach High School in Lido Beach, NY. The cheerleaders will be collecting monetary donations for storm victims during a “2-Day Raise” at school Thursday and Friday and during the Hoover varsity basketball home opener against Lincoln West on Friday night. Hoover English teacher Tiffany Walker, who also serves as varsity cheerleading adviser, said the fundraiser was proposed as a challenge by her friend Deanna Mazur, cheerleading adviser at Jackson High School. “They’re our rival school, so we're hoping to raise more money than Jackson. But, in reality, it’s a friendly rivalry and we’re …

Heritage Society Still Raising Money to Fund Upcoming Move

The North Canton Heritage Society's "Open the Door to History" fundraising campaign is still going on, and the society hopes to reach its goal by November

The North Canton Heritage Society is hoping to move locations sometime this fall. But first, it has to have the money for the move. The organization will head over to the nearby Portage building (where Portage Collaborative Montessori School is) at 239 Portage St. NW, from the Charlotte building at 200 Charlotte St. NW, Suite 102. It's not a big move, but it's costly. The society's goal through their fundraising campaign — "Open the Door to History" — was to raise $115,000 to make the new location handicap accessible inside and out. And that campaign is still taking place. "We have about three-fourths of the money we need in hand," said Kathy Fernandez, executive director of the North Canton Heritage Society. "But we won't be able to move …

Help Create Our 'North Canton Gone Mad!' Playlist

Tell us which song takes you back to the '60s and we'll play it at the April 14 event at the Champion Event Center

Think of this as requesting a song from a DJ. Just, well, way in advance. I'm taking recommendations for songs to play at the April 14 "North Canton Gone Mad!" event, which I'm helping organize with the North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce and other folks from the community. The event is based off of Mad Men, the multi-Emmy and Golden Globe award winning TV series that's set in the '60s. So, sticking with that time period, we're looking for your favorite '60s songs to create a playlist for the event. Sure, we'll have an amazing band there (Wesley Bright and the Hi-Lites), but we plan on keeping the music going all night, even when the band's not on the stage. I've already looked to the North Canton Public Library to get my hands on the …

Dress Like Betty Draper from 'Mad Men?' When? Where? I'm There!

This is where I talk up the April 14 "North Canton Gone Mad!" event, hosted by the North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce at the Champion Event Center, and tell you why even non-"Mad Men" fans can get into it

I certainly am no blonde, but I intend to rock the Betty Draper look like nobody's business at the upcoming "North Canton Gone Mad!" event. In fact, I plan to be among a slew of Betties that night — all of us hair-flipped, hair-sprayed and high-heeled, reliving (or for those like me, living for the first time) the early '60s. That's sort of the magic of it, isn't it? Taking yourself back to a time we're so far removed from now? Getting to wear your winged eyeliner and fire engine-red lipstick without curious stares? And men, for you it's a chance to slick your hair back, slap on a tie and maybe dust off that fedora you haven't worn since someone called you a hipster. If you're really courageous, you could track down a pair of horn-rimmed…

The silent auction, held at the 356th Fighter Group Restaurant, will feature donated items and gift cards from local businesses and will benefit Akron Children's Hospital

The folks at the Akron/Canton chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) are making it ridiculously easy to give back and get something in return this holiday season. The group will host the Winter Wonderland Silent Auction at the 356th Fighter Group Restaurant at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Local Woman with Multiple Sclerosis Keeps Positive Outlook

Kelley Spilios has had multiple sclerosis (MS) for 25 years and continues to be positive about her life and future, including looking at new treatments available. Her friends and family will host a fundraiser for her this Saturday at Rafter's Bar & Grill

Ask anyone who's been diagnosed with a disease that requires long-term treatment and a lifetime of managing that disease and they will tell you that it has dramatically changed their lives, most often with devastating results. How well and how long one lives with the disease can often be determined by attitude. Kelley Spilios was raised in Uniontown and now lives in North Canton. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) at age 19 and has lived with the disease for more than 25 years. While her physical and cognitive conditions are steadily declining, her attitude toward her life is as strong as ever. “It really comes down to making a decision,” Kelley said. “You can make the decision to be sick or not. I’m really pretty lucky because…

The IV treatment in Arizona is relatively ineffective because they do not wait for the liposuction wound(s) to heal properly before administering the stem cells. Most of the cells will simply migrate to the area(s) of the acute tissue damage caused by the liposuction. To maximize chances for success, an appropriate amount of time must pass (about a week) between the time the fat stem cells are …   more ›
