Council's Pick for Ward 3 Rep Not so Clear

Council members no longer ready to vote tonight on a replacement

It looks like North Canton City Council's pick for the next Ward 3 rep isn't as cut and dry as Patch reported today. Ward 2 Councilman Jeff Peters had told North Canton Patch earlier this week that council had reached a consensus on who they'd like to see in the Ward 3 seat and was prepared to approve the new member tonight at a special meeting. But it appears it's not that clear anymore. Today he told Patch that the council will have discussion on the floor and invite all seven candidates. "I don't think we're going to be swearing anyone in tonight," said Peters, head of the Personnel and Safety Committee. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers. Peters said he anticipates a half-hour discussion. Peters said earlier this week …

On the Agenda: Updating Park Regulations, Law Director Interviews & More

North Canton City Council will meet at 7 p.m. tonight inside City Council Chambers. You'll find tonight's agenda along with this quick rundown of what's in store for tonight's meeting.

North Canton City Council is slated to talk about updates to city park regulations as well as a retention grant when members meet inside City Council Chambers tonight. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. Before recognition of visitors, council will have a voice vote authorizing the law director to proceed with the foreclosure of two city properties — 1408 Wilbur Drive NE and 319 Weber Ave. NE. At last week's meeting, Eric Bowles, superintendent of permits and inspection, said the owners owe a few thousand dollars for costs incurred by the city to mow the grass. Also on the agenda is the third and final reading that would authorize the mayor to enter into an industrial and commercial retention grant with the PR company Crow, Montgomery & Clark, …

Council Quick Takes: Failure to File City Income Tax Return Could Carry Stricter Punishment

North Canton City Council discussed at least doubling the fine at Tuesday night's council meeting

North Canton City Council discussed a proposed graffiti ordinance, the Master Plan and a stricter punishment for those who fail to file a city income tax return each year when they met in Council Chambers Tuesday night. Council members discussed doubling the penalty for residents who fail to file their taxes by the mid-April deadline. That means the penalty could be raised from $25 to $50. Council President John Snyder said the proposed change is spurred by those who habitually file their taxes late. As it stands, the fee is $25 and doesn't increase if the person files late again in the future. "Maybe we'll get their attention at $50 and $100 thereafter," Snyder said. Council-at-large Dan Griffith suggested the resident could owe a …

The list of “Other Business” fails to mention that City Council plans to authorize legislation next week allowing the Held Administration to advertise for bids to clean up street sweepings dumped by the City of North Canton in violation of Ohio State law. This is a very sore subject for North Canton’s Mayor David Held as North Canton has been the subject of investigations by the Stark County …   more ›

LOOK: Proposed Graffiti Ordinance in its Entirety

North Canton City Council members expect to have their first reading next week on the ordinance that would punish business owners who leave graffiti on their businesses for longer than 10 days

North Canton officials nailed down details in their proposed graffiti ordinance and expect to have a first reading at their next North Canton City Council meeting Monday. The proposed ordinance would give business owners 10 days to clean graffiti from their buildings before facing a civil penalty. "It does kind of hold them to a tighter timeline in the general sense ... but not such a short time limit that it would punish people who really are victims here," Councilman-at-large Dan Griffith said at Tuesday night's North Canton City Council meeting. Griffith and others on the Ordinance, Rules & Claims Committee worked with Interim Law Director Roy Batista to craft the proposed legislation. Here are some highlights from the proposed …

More of our council members need to read The Patch. I know that Daniel Peters is one who keeps updated on the concerns of the residents of North Canton by reading The Patch. Kudos to Daniel and let's get the other members of council, the mayor and his staff on board. I would especially like to see certain members of the administration who interact with the public take a greater interest in the …   more ›

Council Tables Graffiti Ordinance that Would Crack Down on Dawdling Business Owners

Council chose not to move forward with an ordinance that would penalize business owners who leave graffiti on their buildings for an excessive amount of time

Business owners whose buildings get tagged with graffiti can breathe a sign of relief — for now. North Canton City Council has decided to table an ordinance that would slap the wrists of business owners who don't clean up graffiti in a timely manner. Council had talked at its June 18 meeting about whether the time frame should be two weeks or a month and what the penalty should be (as written, it was a first-degree misdemeanor, while the act of vandalism or criminal damaging is often a less severe second-degree misdemeanor). Doug Lane, president of the North Canton Area Chamber of Commerce, spoke about the proposed ordinance at the North Canton City Council meeting Monday night. He said it can be difficult for business owners to remove …
