Sports Hot Stove Column Goes on Summer Break

We've called timeout on our weekly sports column, brought to you by sports junkie Craig Haueter

There's no way around it: Things are slowing down in the world of North Canton sports. To accommodate that, we're nixing our Tuesday Sports Hot Stove column for the summer, starting today. Believe us when we say we're looking forward to the day Craig Haueter once again can enlighten us about longtime Hoover High coaches and fans (Think Gordon "Gordie" Knisely), offer insight into what could go into a North Canton sports museum and shine a light on things that aren't always pleasant (athletes' use of drugs). So this isn't a "goodbye" to the column; rather, it's a "till we meet again." In the meantime, if you've got an awesome sports story or something you think might make a great feature on North Canton Patch, send it our way. We're not …

Coaches, Community and School Officials Break Ground at North Canton's Don Hertler Sr. Field

Donning hard hats and shovels, several people gathered at North Canton's Memorial Stadium for Thursday's groundbreaking

Only in North Canton. That seemed to be Don Hertler Sr.'s go-to phrase when describing how and why it's possible to rename the field inside North Canton's Memorial Stadium and raise enough money to pay for artificial turf. Only in North Canton do three men coach football for 51 years collectively (that's two families — Hertler Sr., Ed Glass and Don Hertler Jr., the current coach). And only in North Canton do the community members have the drive to honor these men by providing the field with artificial turf and creating something that's more than just a field, but a place for the community to gather. "Most things like this don't happen except in places like this," Hertler Sr. said at Thursday's groundbreaking inside Memorial Stadium. "It's …

Photo of the Day: Mayor Congratulates Don Hertler Sr. at Field Groundbreaking

Mayor David Held shakes the hand of Don Hertler Sr., Hoover High football coach from 1960-1980, at the groundbreaking for the newly named Don Hertler Sr. Field at Memorial Stadium this morning

North Canton Mayor David Held shakes the hand of Don Hertler Sr., Hoover High School football coach from 1960-1980, at this morning's groundbreaking for the newly named Don Hertler Sr. Field inside Memorial Stadium. Standing beside Hertler is Ed Glass, Hoover High football coach from 1981-1995. Community members also are raising money to cover the cost of FieldTurf, an artificial turf that will be installed before fall sports season starts. Check back with North Canton Patch Friday, when we'll have more information on the artificial turf and the committee's fundraising efforts. We'll also have some video clips of today's groundbreaking.

Tournament Time Is a Reminder of North Canton's 1939 High School Basketball Glory

Coach Ray Swope was instrumental in Hoover High's successful run to a state title

This weekend, new Ohio high school boys' basketball champions will be crowned in Columbus. In 1939, All-Ohioan Roy Mohler's free throw in the final two minutes led North Canton High School to a 24-23 win over Sandusky St. Mary and the Class B State Championship and NoCaHi's place in Ohio high school basketball immortality. North Canton's 1938-39 season got off to a disappointing 1-4 start.  There are often defining moments in the course of a team's season, and for Coach Ray Swope and his team, theirs came on Monday following the last loss. Swope's son Ray "Bud" Swope Jr. recounted that night of practice at the high school gym on Charlotte Street when the team was instructed not to suit up. "Dad told the team that he saw the potential of …
