St. Baldrick's Event Buzzes By Fundraising Goal

This year's head-shaving event at Quaker Steak & Lube in North Canton raised nearly $79,000 so far. The original goal — $65,000.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation already has surpassed its fundraising goal this year, thanks to several area residents willing to go under the clippers and go bald for childhood cancer research. St. Baldrick's, which raises awareness and funds to cure childhood cancer, aimed to raise $65,000 and raised a total of $78,558 as of Monday. That's one day after the head-shaving event hosted at Quaker Steak & Lube in North Canton. The organization plans to have an unofficial total within the week. "We were totally blown away by the support from so many for this wonderful event," said Jaime Lenhart, volunteer event organizer for the North Canton event. "There were hundreds of people that came out — even in the cold!" Quaker Steak & Lube, which …

North Canton Panera Raising Money For Breast Cancer Research And Treatment

A portion of the proceeds from every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold will go to the American Cancer Society

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Panera is commemorating it by raising money for cancer research and treatment through the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program. Paneras across the region, including the North Canton's, will sell Pink Ribbon Bagels that are shaped like their iconic namesakes. A portion of the proceeds from every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold will go to local breast cancer charities. Also, for each baker's dozen of bagels that Panera sells, one dollar will go to American Cancer Society. People need not even buy anything from Panera to support the cause. Until the end of the month, Panera will donate 10 cents to the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation for each "like" the Panera Bread …

Broken Leg Doesn't Stop North Canton Resident From Fundraising for Cancer Research

Justin Deierling suffered a broken leg months before the Pelotonia bike ride for cancer research. But that didn't stop him from fundraising this year, and he plans to head to central Ohio to witness it — crutches and all

A scheduling conflict in 2010 kept Justin Deierling from riding in the Pelotonia bike ride — a grassroots effort to raise money to fight cancer. Bent on participating this year, the 28-year-old once again hit a setback, this time in the form of a broken leg. So perhaps no one knows the phrase “better luck next year” better than Deierling. The cyclist said “there’s no question” that he’ll follow through with the ride in 2012. “There’s nothing I love to do more than ride my bike, and I’ve always wanted to do the Pelotonia,” he said. “I was definitely working toward it, and I definitely will next year, too.” The Pelotonia, now in its third year, involves cyclists riding from Columbus to Athens and back, or their choice of several shorter legs…

Whiz Kids: Brady Sabina and Anna Spuhler Raise Money for St. Baldrick's Foundation

Anna Spuhler was featured in an article in March for her brave decision to shave all her hair off. But this time she is sharing the limelight with teammate Brady Sabina, who also supported this worthy cause

This week's Whiz Kids — two again — come to us from Carrie Touchette, mother of Anna Spuhler and friend of Brady Sabina. "Both kids shaved their heads to raise money for cancer research in honor of recently deceased family members," Touchette said. "Together, they raised over $1,700 and money is still coming in." "I think it's amazing that these kids would do this in honor of fallen loved ones, knowing the ridicule that they might face from peers," Touchette said. Do you want your son or daughter, student or friend to be our next Whiz Kid? Email Patch Contributor Lisa Lynch-Frank at lynch821@hotmail.com with the nominee's name, age, school, outstanding deed and key to awesomeness. Video: Going Bare for Cancer Research

Many went bare Sunday as they got their heads shaved inside Quaker Steak & Lube in North Canton. The annual event raised money for childhood cancer research

Hoover High School freshman Anna Spuhler joined dozens of others Sunday inside Quaker Steak & Lube for the ninth annual St. Baldrick's Foundation event. Some had anticipated getting their heads shaved as part of their fundraisers through St. Baldrick's Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. And then some others decided they'd get a shave, too, when they walked in the door. Spuhler, who's had cancer affect her family, has been collecting money for weeks. "The thousands of children that are diagnosed with cancer each year don't have a choice whether or not they want to lose their hair," Spuhler said in a previous …
