Smash and grab A Canton man called police on April 16 at 7 p.m. to report someone had smashed into his car parked in the 6400 block of Wise Avenue. A stereo face plate, speakers and photos were stolen from the car. Police have no suspects or leads. Back door burglary On April 15 at 3:59 p.m., an unknown number of burglars broke through the back door of a home in the 1500 block of Red Coach Street. Cash, several credit cards and photos were stolen. There are no suspects at this time. Sloppy driver On April 13 at 11:45 p.m., a resident reported a Jeep with no headlights on was driving down the 300 block of East Maple Street. Not quite an emergency A woman called 911 three times on March 28 to tell Mayfield Heights Police that her laundry had been taken from the laundry room in her apartment building, according to The Plain Dealer. The police offers who responded to the calls said that the woman was drunk and combative when they arrived. They asked her to only call 911 for emergencies and a roommate agreed to look after the woman that evening. The woman ultimately decided not to file a police report. Drugging and driving At 3 p.m. Feb. 25, a 22-year-old North Canton man, reportedly high on keyboard cleaner, crashed his car into a tree. The man reportedly inhaled a 12-ounce aerosol can then passed out and crashed in the 200 block of Roselane Street SW. The process is known as "huffing," where inhalants are used to induce alcohol-like intoxication. The police report did not indicate whether he was treated for injuries. Dagostine, 43, of Tallmadge, was charged Feb. 26 with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, in connection with a Huntington Bank heist in Cuyahoga Falls. Fortunately, police did not have to track him down as Dagostine was already being held in Summit County Jail on a separate robbery charge. On Feb. 24, Dagostine allegedly walked into the Giant Eagle-Huntington Bank, handed the teller a note demanding money and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. …

Unsavory behavior A suspected drug addict was pulled over by North Canton police around 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 21 for reportedly stalking his 71-year-old mother and her friend. According to the police report, his mother had just been picked up from Mercy Medical Center and arrived home to find her 43-year-old son parked near her residence. She feared her son was going to demand money from her, so the pair headed toward the North Canton Police Department, with her son driving close behind. The woman pulled into the department’s parking lot and blared the horn. Several police officers emerged from the department and were briefed by the women. City residents who left their homes or vehicles unlocked became the victims of thieves, according to several North Canton Police Department reports. Tools worth $2,300 stolen from construction worker A resident of the 400 block of Portage Street Northwest went out to his unlocked 2008 Ford F150 early morning July 25 to find it had been ransacked, according to a July 27 police report. Two days later the construction worker discovered that his Makita drill and driver set valued at $2,300 was missing. The theft occurred sometime between 11 p.m. July 24 and 6:30 a.m. July 25. $1,200 TV taken from unlocked home The owner of an unlocked home in the 200 block of Bachtel Street Southwest was only gone just over an hour, but that was enough time …

GPS, iPod stolen from car on Willaman Avenue On Nov. 25, thieves got into a Willaman Avenue car and stole a GPS and iPod, police said. The car was not locked. Everhard Road apartment robbed, suspect arrested A 28-year-old man broke into an Everhard Road apartment on Nov. 24, and made off with all sorts of technology. Police arrested Matthew Brown and charged him with burglary, theft and criminal damaging for breaking in. Police responded to a call that a man had passed out at an intersection and arrived to find him still unconscious
A 21-year-old Homeworth man passed out in his vehicle as he sat at an intersection at 7th Street NW about 1:50 a.m. April 22. A passing motorist called police, and when police showed up, the man still was asleep at the wheel. He’s charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence, a first-degree misdemeanor, and slow speed impeding traffic, a minor misdemeanor. Hoover student loses nearly $1,500 in belongings Someone stole items totalling $1,435 from one 15-year-old student at Hoover High School between 3 p.m. and 3:35 p.m. April 26. North Canton burglaries are no more frequent in 2010 than 2009, but burglars targeted certain houses and stole big-ticket items
There was nothing like a crime wave in North Canton this year, but police did detect a change in the way burglars went about their work. They say burglars seemed to target homes instead of picking them randomly, as they've done in the past, and the thieves got bigger hauls than they did in years prior. "We had them going into places that already had alarm systems and stealing more expensive items than before," said Police Chief Michael Grimes. North Canton has had 46 burglaries as of mid-December, compared to 49 for all of 2009, police said. Stolen items ranged in value from a couple of dollars to $60,000. Several residents reported losses greater than $20,000. Criminals this year were more likely to come back and hit the same neighborhood…
