LOOK: Hoover Cheerleaders, Basketball Players Shine in Pics & Clips Gallery

This year's girls and boys basketball players are getting some limelight on North Canton Patch this week, after a Patch user uploaded dozens of game shots to the website

Hoover High athletes are once again in the spotlight on North Canton Patch, as one user uploaded dozens of recent game shots to the Pics & Clips gallery. The Lady Vikings had beat Perry High School last Saturday, while the boys basketball team brought in a win over Bishop Kearny (from New York) at a Walsh University, and Patch viewer Earle E. Wise Jr. was there to see it happen. We've featured just a handful of recent photos from Wise in this post, but you can find tons more in our Pics & Clips gallery. And remember, the Pics & Clips gallery is a great place to upload your photos and videos from around town, pics of school events and anything else that says "North Canton."

Basketball Legend Bobby Plump to Speak at Hoover Hoops Tip-Off Dinner

Plump, whose winning shot inspired the movie "Hoosiers," will speak at the Nov. 11 event

Big-name sports stars are pretty much staples of the Hoover Hoops Tip-Off Dinners. At the annual boys basketball fundraiser, audience members have heard words of wisdom from stars like former NBA players Austin Carr and North Canton native Dick Snyder, not to mention extreme locals like Michael Gallina, superintendent of North Canton City Schools who played baseball for the University of Mount Union. For the 10th annual dinner this year, Hoover Hoops has invited another sports legend: Bobby Plump, the Indiana native who sunk the infamous buzzer-beating winning shot for the Milan Indians when they played Muncie Central in the 1954 Indiana state basketball finals. The “small-town team versus big-city players” upset served as the inspiration …

Hoover High Coach Reaches 500-Win Milestone in 107-56 Romp Over Fitch

Coach Montgomery reaches 500 career wins and senior Nyles Evans becomes all-time leading scorer in school history

The Hoover High School boys' basketball team celebrated several individual achievements and a team record Friday night as a result of their 107-56 lopsided win over Federal League opponent Fitch High School at the Win Tunnel. Veteran coach Randy Montgomery reached 500 wins for his career — only the 40th coach in the history of Ohio high school basketball to do so. For Montgomery, he never really thought he would reach such a milestone. "I remember after my first two years of coaching and we had won 25 games total and I saw Jack Greynolds had just won number 400," Montgomery said. "I thought 'wow I'd never get there.'" Senior guard Nyles Evans scored 46 points to pass Bret Wackerly for both the school's single-game scoring record and career…

McKinley Freshmen Boys Beat Hoover on Final-Second Shot

Bulldogs battle back from early deficit to grab the win from the Vikings

Greg Allison’s put-back shot from the left side of the backboard as time expired gave McKinley a thrilling 39-37 win over the Hoover Vikings on the Vikings’ home court Monday night. Although disappointed with the final score, Hoover freshman assistant coach Paul Eriksen was proud of his squad’s effort. “I am extremely proud of how we competed," Eriksen said. “It was just a matter of McKinley making a play at the end, and you have to tip your hat to them." Hoover freshman head coach Todd Blackledge was not in attendance as he was working the college football national championship game for ESPN in Arizona. Allison’s heroics capped a back-and-forth exchange of scoring over the final 70 seconds of the contest. Hashim Woods of McKinley started …

Hoover 7th Grade Boys Basketball Holds Off Perry

Kyle Siber leads the way with 19 points and nine rebounds

Hoover’s 7th grade Black fought off several small rallies by Perry Black to defeat the Panthers 52-39 Wednesday night at the North Canton Middle School gymnasium. Perry’s Alex Volpe scored on a layup with 4:57 to play in the game to cut the Vikings’ advantage to 38-29. However, Hoover’s Kyle Siber’s offensive rebound and score off a missed free throw a short time later would push Hoover’s lead back to 14 and the Vikings were never challenged again. The Vikings displayed balanced scoring both in the paint and from the perimeter.  Besides 19 points from the 6-foot Siber, forwards Matt Hilinski and Steven Shimko each scored nine points. Meanwhile, guard Cameron Mayle added eight points including two 3-pointers. Perry had two players in double…
