'Everyday Mathematics' Program Brings Changes to Kindergarten-Fifth Grade

The North Canton Board of Education approved the program Wednesday night. Students now will take art, health and physical education, music and library in a four-day rotation.

Starting next school year, students in kindergarten through fifth grade will see some changes in their class schedules because of a new “Everyday Mathematics” program. The program and use of the Everyday Mathematics textbooks were unanimously approved at a special North Canton City Schools Board of Education meeting inside the Hoover High Media Center Wednesday night. Essentially, Everyday Mathematics takes math and applies it to everyday life. “It’s application of the concept — not memorization,” Curriculum Director Peggy Savage said. “The one thing we want to stress is this is not how parents learned math. We want them to know that, and that we’re going to do what we need to do so that parents are comfortable with the program, too.” The …

On the Agenda: School Board to Discuss Purchase of 'Everyday Math' Textbooks

The North Canton City Schools Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. tonight in the Hoover High Media Center to discuss the textbooks and how the switch to "everyday mathematics" will affect students' schedules

At the Feb. 15 North Canton School Board meeting, board members weren't able to get answers to all the questions they had about the Everyday Mathematics Common Core State Standards Edition textbooks. They'll hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. today in the Hoover High Media Center to further discuss the textbooks, which are aimed at kindergarten through fifth-grade classes and would be used during the 2012-2013 school year. The board tabled the item at the Feb. 15 meeting at the suggestion of board member Chris Thomas. Thomas said if the math classes are doubled for those grades, it's unclear what other classes will suffer because of that. Check back with North Canton Patch for more school board coverage.

School Board Quick Takes: Board Approves Nine Retirements

The retirements include eight teachers and a reading specialist

A handful of teachers are slated to retire this year, including a couple we've featured on North Canton Patch (Laura Luikart and Sue Oryszak).  The North Canton City Schools Board of Education met Wednesday night in the Hoover High Media Center and approved the following resignations for retirement: Superintendent Michael Gallina said the teachers' years working in North Canton total 238. Curriculum Director Peggy Savage said a majority of those teachers will be internally replaced. "Surprisingly, with the combination of the unification of the buildings (the Unified Elementary Design) and the student population, in the end we're only going to have to replace two people, which is pretty amazing," she said. Board members expressed their …

School Board Members Oppose Administrative Staffing Changes

North Canton Board of Education members expressed some differing opinions Wednesday about an elementary principal's move to instructional supervisor

Greentown Elementary Principal Bryan McKenzie will become the district’s instructional supervisor next year, and Jeff Breit, Hoover High associate principal, will take McKenzie’s place at Greentown. The North Canton City Schools Board of Education approved the changes in administrative staffing at Wednesday night’s board of education meeting, but not without some contention from board members. (The changes passed with a vote of 3-2). The instructional supervisor position has existed for the last four years but has remained unfilled while others have performed those duties, District Superintendent Michael Gallina said. “As we’ve looked at this particular ‘resurrection,’ if you will, of that particular role in the district, that has come …

Or perhaps in an executive session prior to their vote, they were discussing just exactly WHY they would need to move a principal out of his current role. A district doesn't just up and change a principal's role when he's only been in it for a short time. There's a REASON. And that's something you nor I will ever be privy to. But our board members are right on to question why they would find out …   more ›
