Calligraphy Artist Shares Expertise With Middle School Students

Kathy Jevic visited the North Canton Middle School recently to help students hone their calligraphy skills. The students were working on a project funded through an ArtsinStark grant.

Let's face it: Calligraphy is not an easy thing to master. But calligrapher Kathy Jevic made it fun and enlightening for students when she hosted a calligraphy workshop recently at North Canton Middle School. The workshop coincided with students' calligraphy projects and was made possible through an ArtsinStark grant, which teachers Ryan Krieg and Kathy Wyckoff applied for. The accompanying photos, provided by Krieg, show some of the students' illuminated poem projects. About the students' eagerness to learn during the workshop, Jevic said: "I think they did a very good job, and they were very attentive." Jevic has a long history in the arts. North Canton Middle School Gets Grant to Explore Medieval Art

The $500 grant was awarded through ArtsinStark

North Canton Middle School got a $500 grant from ArtsinStark this year to help students learn more about medieval history and art. Sixteen grants, ranging from $500-$750, were awarded to schools throughout Stark County at an awards ceremony at Cable Recital Hall in the Cultural Center last month, ArtsinStark Education Coordinator Jennifer Snow said. A total of about $12,000 was awarded that day. Those grants went to seven school districts, and North Canton Middle School was the only school in North Canton City School District to receive a grant. Only two North Canton schools had applied this year, she said. Last year, North Canton City School District took home $2,000 in grants, which was more than any other district. “Their project …

Hoover High Handbell Choir Gives Special Education Students a Chance to Get Musical

Hoover High School turned a $500 mini-grant from ArtsinStark into an opportunity to put together a bell choir that includes special needs students. Vocal music instructor Patricia Grewell worked alongside Patti Thoman, intervention specialist at Hoover High, to write the grant. The bell choir met on Tuesdays after school in April and May and will continue next fall.
