Heads Up, North Canton Drivers: DUI Checkpoint Nearby This Weekend

The Ohio State Highway Patrol will announce the location Friday morning

Portage County is becoming a popular location for sobriety checkpoints this year. The Ohio State Highway Patrol announced Thursday morning that Portage will again be the site for a drunk driving checkpoint Friday evening.   The street location for the checkpoint will be announced Friday morning. Check Patch for updates. The checkpoints are federally funded and local police departments assist in the operation. The purpose is to "deter and intercept impaired drivers," according to the OSHP. "Based on provisional data, there were 332 OVI-related fatal crashes in which 359 people were killed last year and 7,507 injured in Ohio,” Lt. Judge Issues Warrant After Streaker Misses Court Appearance

Police say Christopher S. McCormick, 26, of North Canton, crashed into a federal building before taking his clothes off and running around. He failed to appear for his arraignment hearing in Stark County court Monday.

A Stark County judge has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Christopher McCormick, the man who police say ran around naked after crashing into a federal building May 5. McCormick, 26, of North Canton, didn't show up to his arraignment hearing Tuesday, after the hearing was pushed back three times, according to court documents. McCormick was being treated at Heartland Behavior Healthcare since his arrest. McCormick had driven a Dodge Stratus into the southwest corner of the Ralph Regula Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse at 301 McKinley Ave. SW about 3 a.m. May 5, according to NewsNet5.com. Pot Brownie Reported at Hoover High on 4/20: Police Blotter

Police responded to Hoover High School after being told one student gave another a brownie laced with marijuana during the school day on April 20. The student ate the brownie knowing that the marijuana was in it, according to the police report. The report did not list any suspect information. Car damaged by rock-thrower on Everhard Road Someone threw a rock at a car's windshield three to four times, breaking the windshield and denting the roof, between 11:30 p.m. May 4 and 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The car was sitting in the 100 block of Everhard Road. Drunken man with shopping cart arrested outside Gabriel Bros. A 30-year-old Canton man was arrested for theft and disorderly conduct by intoxication about 2 a.m. April 28, after police saw him …

Online Video of 16-Year-Old Boy in Bath Tub Causes Parental Scare

A North Canton woman called police about 9:50 a.m. Tuesday to report that a video of a local 16-year-old boy in the bath tub had been posted all over Facebook and YouTube that day. Five 15- and 16-year-olds were involved in the making and posting of the video, according to a call-for-service entry from the North Canton Police Department. Police contacted the Stark County Prosecutor's Office, which said no crime was committed because the boy's genitals were not exposed in the video.

Court Appearance for Streaker Pushed Back

Christopher S. McCormick, who'se accused of crashing into a federal building then streaking, was slated to make an initial appearance in court today. According to court records, he's still being treated at a mental health facility.

Text Alerts Could Offer City Residents and Employees Heads-Up in Emergencies

City officials are supportive of a wireless emergency notification system that enables dispatchers to send a text, email and phone call during emergencies. The system was discussed at Monday night's North Canton City Council meeting.

Emergency notifications — like a heads up about a flood, missing child or boil alert — could be making their way to North Canton employees and residents via text message, email and phone call soon. City officials discussed the Wireless Emergency Notification System (WENS) that makes spreading the word about emergencies more efficient at Monday night's North Canton City Council meeting. "We can notify numerous phones, numerous texts, numerous emails at the touch of a button," said North Canton Fire Chief John Bacon, who led the discussion about the system that night. Maybe the city should reverse the program and give us residents all the council members and mayors cell phone numbers and we can text you at 2 am when our homes are flooded. Everhard Road Burglaries Spur Crime Watch Meeting

The Stark County Prosecutor's Office and North Canton police are teaming up to help keep residents safe with a crime watch meeting Tuesday night

A few burglaries along Everhard Road in the past year have residents wondering why they're being targeted. Their concerns prompted a crime watch meeting, set to take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the North Canton City Council Chambers. Jim Knight, a crime prevention specialist with the Stark County Prosecutor's Office, will lead the meeting, which will help residents become proactive against crime. North Canton Police Lt. Stanley Strausser said the department has investigated five burglaries on Everhard Road since the beginning of 2011. It may not seem like a large number, but it is for that type of area.
