Ric Sayre, 57, Walsh University All-American and Olympic Marathon Runner, to Be Remembered at Local Events

Sayre was a two-time NAIA All-American in cross country for Walsh and one of only four American men to qualify for five Olympic marathon trials

The late Ric Sayre, two-time NAIA All-American in cross country for the Walsh Cavaliers and one of only four American men to qualify for five Olympic marathon trials, will be remembered at two local events in the next few weeks. A memorial gathering is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7, 2610 Ley Drive, Akron, according to the Akron Beacon-Journal. Sayre, who died of a heart attack June 21 at age 57 following a run near his home in Ashland, OR, also will be remembered Sept. 10 during the annual Ric Sayre Invitational Cross Country Meet at Walsh University. “He was the first All-American that Walsh had,” said Dan McCallion, longtime Walsh track and cross country coach. “He was the benchmark for Walsh turning …

Dr. Bernadine Healy Loop, Who Led National Institutes of Health, American Red Cross and More, Died Saturday at 67

The Gates Mills resident and wife of former Cleveland Clinic CEO Floyd D. Loop wrote a book about her journey with brain cancer.

Dr. Bernadine Healy Loop, the first woman to serve as director of the National Institutes of Health and past president of the American Red Cross, died Saturday, Aug. 6, at age 67. The Gates Mills resident wrote a memoir about her experience with brain cancer titled The Living Time: Faith and Facts to Transform Your Cancer Journey in 2007. She was named Cleveland Clinic head of research in 1985, NIH director in 1991, Ohio State University college of medicine dean in 1995, American Heart Association president in 1998 and Red Cross CEO in 1999. In 1994, she ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate, losing in the primary to Mike DeWine. Richard A. Weaver, 76, Who Founded Veterinary Wellness Center of North Canton, Died in Motorcycle Crash

The longtime veterinarian also treated animals on Christian mission trips to Third World countries

Richard Austin Weaver, 76, who opened the Veterinary Wellness Center of North Canton two years ago to provide low-cost basic veterinary services, died July 28 in a motorcycle accident in Whitehall, MT. Weaver, a veterinarian for 48 years, set up his wellness center to offer vaccines, medical tests and treatment of minor illnesses for pets, whose owners could not otherwise afford it. His family intends to keep offering those services, according to this statement posted on the center’s website: “Dr. Weaver’s passion for providing veterinary care at the Veterinary Wellness Center of North Canton will continue by way of his team and other certified veterinarians who will assist in the interim.” Establishing the wellness center appears to be an…
