Heads Up, North Canton Drivers: DUI Checkpoint Nearby This Weekend

The Ohio State Highway Patrol will announce the location Friday morning

Portage County is becoming a popular location for sobriety checkpoints this year. The Ohio State Highway Patrol announced Thursday morning that Portage will again be the site for a drunk driving checkpoint Friday evening.   The street location for the checkpoint will be announced Friday morning. POLL: Who's Got the Perfect Patio?

You know what we're talking about — just the right amount of sun-to-shade ratio, a great view and maybe a good drink to go along with it

A patio in the spring and summertime is a thing of beauty, isn't it? And here in North Canton, we're not lacking in great outdoor patios. That was made evident when we asked for your recommendations for this week's Readers' Choice poll. Here's what we heard: Don't see your favorite North Canton patio on the list? It's probably because you didn't get your nomination in on time! We'll close this patio poll at 5 p.m. Friday and announce the winner on Saturday. In the event of a tie, Local Editor Morgan Day will choose the winner based on which business has the most reviews on its Directory listing. (We're talking about positive reviews.) Now here's something we have to say: "Voting results posted in real time shall not be deemed official …

WANTED: Bird Bloggers in North Canton

We want your bird photos, your bird observations. Heck, we'd even like to see your birding videos!

Seriously, my favorite radio station is any public radio station and I often pester the editors with re-enactments of the stories I hear.  So when WCPN featured The Cleveland Natural History Museum's Harvey Webster in a show all about birding I was inspired to reach out to you directly.  In the program, Webster mentioned the Audubon Society's weekly bird watching events at parks across the region and several great local bird blogs.  But I'll bet North Canton has some undiscovered bird bloggers. And I personally invite you to start your own blog and share your bird photos, observations, heck you can even post a video if you have it.  Are you already blogging about birds? You can post your blog on Patch and reach a wider, local audience.  …

This Saturday, North Canton Middle School students who never thought they'd be part of a Soap Box Derby team are getting the chance to do just that. Many will strap on helmets and hop into super stock cars that they and their teammates built as they compete at Derby Downs Hill in Akron at the Gravity Racing Challenge, sponsored by the All-American Soap Box Derby. "They're pretty jazzed about it," Todd Alkire said of his sixth-grade class. "They've been working for at least three solid weeks building the cars." The project provided several lessons for the students, from learning to build a race car to understanding the scientific concepts that apply to racing. The project falls into line with a STEM curriculum (Science, Technology, …
