Wish-A-Thon For Terminally Ill Kids Kicks Off Today

Donations are rolling in while people stop out to Thursday's Plaza in Canton and call to donate to the North Canton-based charity Wishes Can Happen

Stark County doctors: You’ve been challenged.

Two local doctors pledged $1,000 during today’s , and they thought others would be up for some friendly competition. They’ve challenged other physicians to “out-donate” them.

Radio personalities, volunteers and donors are swarming the big white tent set up at Thursday’s Plaza in Canton today. They’re taking donations in person and through the phone line 330-649-9474 to raise money for Wishes Can Happen, a North Canton-based charity that grants wishes to terminally ill children.

They’ll be at the plaza at 4705 Dressler Road NW until 6 p.m. today and from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday.

“We’re thankful for every donation,” said , Wishes Can Happen founder. “Last year they raised $40,000 and they’re hoping to exceed that. We’re grateful for every penny.”

That $40,000 comes out to about eight wishes, Morrow said.

Right now, the charity is working to complete  field of dreams at his Navarre home. (?) A handful of children also will take a trip to Disney World as soon as their doctors' appointments allow for it.

And Saturday, when a Perry Township boy gets released from Children’s Hospital, they’ll surprise him with what Morrow calls a “man cave,” or bedroom filled with video games, new carpet, a TV and a bathroom.

Becky Clark, general sales manager for WHBC, said the annual Wish-A-Thon (which has happened the last 29 years) said the radio station is happy to get the word out about the charity.

“It’s not just about the donations right now,” she said. “It’s about the awareness for Wishes Can Happen.”
