St. Luke Lutheran Community Reaches Out for Volunteers

Local elderly care facility provides many ways for residents to help

North Canton residents can help enrich the lives of older adults in a variety of ways at St. Luke Lutheran Community. The faith-based service says one thing is especially important to their residents, and that's volunteerism.

“Volunteers can work as much or little as they want,” said Cheryl Smith, volunteer coordinator. “We’re flexible.”

There are several activities that they need help with, like bingo and special events.  For instance, the most current project is the Valentine’s Day project, where they have cookies and choose a king and queen.

Volunteers are needed to help decorate for the events. They could also help with mail and paper delivery, along with maintenance duties. The Foundation is also always in need of musicians to play for residents.

“We need help transporting residents,” Smith said. “The resident life staff is very active.”

Smith said there is no lifting of residents, but they need help transporting residents for outings. They go shopping, have lunch and go bowling. They need volunteers to go with them on the bus.

A lot of residents enjoy pets and would like to have visitors bring in their pets.  However, pets must have their papers before entering.  Visitors without a pet are also welcome.

“We need people who are open to going to many people in one day,” Smith said.

The Foundation shows appreciation to the volunteers by having a luncheon in April specifically for them.

“We appreciate all the time and energy that volunteers give us,” Smith said.

The St. Luke Foundation was established in 1983 to provide ministry, financial support and care. It’s a not-for-profit, charitable organization.

The St. Luke Foundation participates in Fishers Foods' rewards program.
