PHOTOS: Athletes Compete in North Canton Special Olympics

Athletes from all over Stark County took part Saturday in the annual event, hosted by the North Canton Jaycees

Dozens of athletes from Northeast Ohio got the chance to compete Saturday in mini-javelin, shot put, and walking and running competitions at North Canton Memorial Stadium.

It was all part of the North Canton Jaycees and Invitational Track Meet and Bocce Compeition.

"It's an opportunity to get out and practice and compete and have some comaraderie with the other athletes," said Jennifer Geh, Special Olympics chair.

She said the community's response to the event this year was amazing.

"We actually maxed out this year," she said. "We had people wanting to volunteer and we were creating new jobs for people. The fact that 80 people from the community would take a Saturday to come here and volunteer their time is fantastic."

Teams and organizations included Carroll DD, Medina SHC, Medina DD, Portage Kent, Stark DD, Stark Public, Summit DD and Summit Hudson.
