6 Ways to Volunteer Your Time in 2011

The coming of a new year inspires people to contribute to a greater good. Residents of North Canton can take their charitable aspirations to these six places around the community.

With options like leading an exercise class, reading to preschoolers, coaching basketball, designing brochures and greeting people, the YMCA offers a variety of volunteer work opportunities. Kathy Yaros, family and community director, said the Y is one of the biggest volunteer-driven organizations in the area.

She added volunteering your time is a great way to show gratitude to your community.

"(Volunteering) is a way to give back to a community that’s giving back to you,” Yaros said.

2. Habitat for Humanity

This Christian-based, nonprofit organization provides shelter to those less fortunate. Volunteers help build homes for the families in need. The organization also accepts donations of money and materials.

3. Stark County Hunger Task Force

This organization provides food for those who can no longer afford to feed themselves. Volunteers help serve meals at food pantries and gather donations by acting as ushers or ticket takers for events at the Canton Civic Center or Palace Theater. 

4. North Canton Meals on Wheels

This independent meal-providing organization relies solely on donations and volunteer assistance. Meals are prepared and delivered to people who need or want relief from preparing their own.

5. American Red Cross

The organization is widely known for its efficient means of responding to disaster victims in need of various services nationwide. The organization accepts donations in forms of time, skills, blood, goods and services.

6. New Neighbors League

Originally founded to greet new residents, New Neighbors League has expanded beyond that. In addition to providing welcome packets to recently relocated members of the community, people have the opportunity to meet new connections among their new neighbors by engaging in regularly scheduled social events.
