Your Brain ... on Social Media With Howard Stern

Did you get a phone call from radio icon Howard Stern on New Year's Eve? What if I told you that if you were paying attention at the right time, you could have spoken to Stern personally?

Just in case you didn't see , we are talking social media here. One of my favorite social media networking services, Twitter, had some exciting happenings this past weekend that I couldn't wait to share with you!

Twitter is an online social networking service that enables its users to send and read text-based posts of up to 140 characters, known as "tweets." It launched in July of 2006. The service rapidly gained worldwide popularity, with more than 300 million users as of 2011, generating more than 300 million tweets and handling more than 1.6 billion search queries per day. It has been described as "the SMS of the Internet."

Were you tweeting on New Year's Eve? If you were, did you receive a phone call from radio icon Howard Stern on New Year's Eve?

Yes, THEE Howard Stern. Me neither ... and boy is my husband (who is a big Stern fan) upset with me for not paying attention to Twitter on Saturday night ... of ALL nights, he says.

So the story behind why Howard Stern and his wife, Beth, called many of their fans on New Year's Eve is a boring one (something to do with Paul McCartney). So I won't bore you with the details. However, the fun part of this story is that because of social media, Twitter specifically, some lucky Stern fans received an unexpected phone call from Howard and Beth Stern on New Year's Eve. The listeners sent in their phone numbers via Twitter after Howard tweeted that he and Beth were "drunk dialing." Some Stern fans spoke with the King of All Media while others got voicemails from the happy couple.

Whether you are a fan of Howard Stern is inmaterial. Either way, Stern is, by all means, a known icon in the world of radio and more, as he will be a judge on the upcoming season of America's Got Talent. If you live in this world, you know his name and probably know what he does for a living. His Sirius XM radio show is estimated to have 5 to 6 million fans listening every day and yet this radio personality decided to share his happiness with his fans to ring in the new year.

In case you aren't in the loop of what "tweeting" is, Twitter offers the ability for individuals to instantly communicate with anyone who "follows" them. In this case, Stern has 926,000 followers and with a simple "tweet" of "send us your phone number," some very "ordinary" people in Ohio, and many other places around the world, got to speak to Howard and Beth Stern on New Year's Eve, making the ball drop in Times Square seem like a boring event.

All because of social media. Pretty cool if you really think about it. Right?
