Dogwood Pool Open Till Sept. 1 — Maybe

Dogwood Pool's season could extend two weeks past its announced Aug. 19 closing date, but there's a catch.

In year's past, the last day to enjoy summer fun at Dogwood Pool landed on Labor Day.

Yet, in 2012, the schedule was wound back two weeks, forcing the local hotspot to close in mid-August due to a lifeguard staffing shortage.

This year, the closing date is slated for Aug. 19; however, city officials are working to extend the season from Aug. 20 to Sept. 1 by hiring new, part-time lifeguards.

According to Jim Davis, superintendent of North Canton's city services, the fate of Dogwood Pool's season extension rests on whether or not the hiring program can attract enough lifeguards to adequately surveil the large pool.

"Depending on the number (of lifeguards) hired, we could be open weekdays, weekends, both weekdays and weekends. . .or, if no one applies, we could close as scheduled on Aug. 19," said Davis.

Due to safety concerns and federal regulations, 15 lifeguards are needed for each shift.

Here's what prospective lifeguards need to know, according to Mayor David Held:

  • Work from 4 to 8 p.m.
  • Lifeguards must have all current certifications.
  • Pay range is $7.85-$8.53 depending on experience.
  • Lifeguard orientation starts 9 a.m. Aug. 17 at Dogwood Pool, located at 365 7th St. NE.
