Jeff Mallette's Tuesday at the U.S. Amateur Cut Short
Barring a miracle, Wednesday morning will represent the extent of Mallette's week at the U.S. Amateur in Wisconsin
After nine holes in Tuesday’s second round at the U. S. Amateur, s chances of reaching Wednesday’s match play competition look bleak.
Teeing off in the late afternoon at Erin Hills Golf Course, in Erin, WI, the North Canton native opened slowly, making three bogeys in first nine holes. Barring a miracle, Wednesday morning will represent the extent of his week.
The tough start had to be disappointing for Mallette, who shot a respectable 2-over 72 in Monday’s opening round at Blue Mound Country Club.

The 47-year-old is bidding to make the match play portion of the event for the first time in four tries. In 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2008, Mallette competed in the U.S. Amateur but always came up short.
Though a five-birdie rally seems unlikely, Mallette would need exactly that to get back to even-par, where the cut line is currently expected. The top 64 golfers who make the field will play in a head-to-head competition, which will conclude Sunday with a 36-hole final match at Erin Hills.
