Works From Portland, OR, Photographer on Display at Stark State College

Stop by the North Canton campus to see works from Rick Canham, who specializes in surreal nature photos

Photographer Rick Canham from Portland, OR, will display his collection of photos called  “Brief Moments in Light,” Sept. 21 - Nov. 12 at .

The show will be featured in two locations on campus: the Stark State Gallery on the second floor of the Student Center and the Advanced Technology Center, according to a news release from Stark State.

“The mind-boggling beauty to be found in this country is a constant source of amazement and awe for me,” says Canham, who has 30 years of experience with the medium and whose work has been shown throughout the U.S. and much of Europe.

“Among the things I hope are apparent to the viewer is my deep respect and reverence for the phenomena of our natural environment."

His images follow three basic stylistic directions: abstracts, which are studies in form, light and color of natural features; minimalist landscapes, which tend to be stark, dramatic and simple; and impressions which are soft, emotive and often shot on a foggy day.

“The works you see here result from a combination of technical competence, those 30 years of experience and hard work,” adds Canham, who has a bachelor of fine arts degree from San Jose State University. “I have trained myself over the years to see well, to get myself to extraordinary places at the right time of day and to compose in a painterly fashion.“

One of few photographers in the country who does all his own color darkroom printing, Canham assures he uses no unusual processes in the darkroom, no digital manipulation and very little burning and dodging. He admits to spending countless hours fussing over photos to give the best color balance and perfect print density.

Canham’s collection of photos can be seen on his website, where his gallery is categorized by such words as On the Beach, Moving Waters, Oregon on My Mind and California Dreamin’. He also provides accounts of trips he’s made to such places as the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Yosemite National Park, the Canadian Rockies, Nepal and Lo Manthang. While his photos are being exhibited at Stark State, he’s hiking and taking photos in India, Bhutan and Vietnam.
