Walsh University Earns College of Distinction Recognition

The university was one of 10 in Ohio to earn the distinction based on its commitment to engaging and providing successful outcomes for students, great teaching and vibrant community

Walsh University recently accepted membership into Colleges of Distinction — a higher education organization dedicated to profiling colleges that will fully prepare prospective students for their lives upon graduation.

To be selected by the organization, Walsh had to rank highly in four areas: engaging students, great teaching, a vibrant community and successful outcomes.

One of the reasons Colleges of Distinction selected Walsh was because of its strong commitment to engaging students.

“According to the National Survey for Student Engagement, 90 percent of Walsh students say they have an excellent relationship with their professors,” according to the organization's website. “In fact, Walsh ranked significantly higher than its peer institutions in all areas of student engagement. Numerous experiential learning, community service and study abroad opportunities, combined with an extremely supportive campus environment are all essential components of creating this atmosphere of student engagement.”

Although President Richard Jusseaume was pleased with the university’s distinction, he was not surprised by the acknowledgement.

“It speaks to everything we are doing here,” he said. “When students come to visit the campus, about 50 percent enroll immediately. There’s a sense of community and hospitality here. Students know they’ll get the support they need. When they come on campus, they sense it. That’s what makes us unique.”

Another highlight of Walsh’s recognition was its dedication to great teaching. According to the organization’s website, faculty members bring professional and real world experience into the classroom and value the benefits of collaboration among students and staff.

In addition to Walsh, nine other institutions earned membership into the Colleges of Distinction: Defiance College, Hiram College, Lake Erie College, Ohio Northern University, Ohio Wesleyan University, the University of Dayton, Urbana University, Wittenberg University and Xavier University.
