Register for the North Canton Library's Summer Reading Club for Children

Deadline to join is July 23

The is making summer reading fun by offering a few incentives along the way.

From now until July 23, kids can come in with their parents and pick up a reading record to keep track of how long they read per day, said library associate Sally Thomas. For every hour they complete, they get a prize. After six hours of reading, they get a kite — the grand prize.

If the child continues to read throughout the summer, they can keep track of their time with an extra activity sheet and will win a coupon to a nearby restaurant, Thomas said.

Each year, approximately 1,000 kids participate, she added.

"We've been doing summer reading forever," Thomas said. "It's important to keep children reading throughout the summer, otherwise they lose their reading skills."

If participants finish all six hours by July 23, Thomas said they will be put in a drawing for a chance to win a book.
