Photo of the Day: Matt Corey Jams at Walsh University

Corey, a Canton native, brought his band over to Walsh University for a night of live music in the David Center

Musician and Canton native Matt Corey made a stop at last week as part of his band’s national college tour.

A graduate of McKinley High School, Corey, along with his three-member band, rocked the David Center on Walsh’s campus, with Corey as the group’s front man on saxophone. The band has been on the road since August on a 51-city tour that includes performances on college campuses and military installations, according to a news release from the university.

Corey has been on the college scene since 2009 with his concept of combining live music with DJ music.

“I wanted to find a way to capture the raw energy and improvisation of a live band set and combine that with fun of a DJ dance set,” Corey notes on his website. “When I brought my turntables on stage and the band became part of that music, adding new sections and melodies to the tunes that were already on everybody’s radio and iPods, suddenly the entire room became engaged, and the music came to life.”

Corey played a variety of tunes from Michael Jackson to Katy Perry, all dance favorites, for the crowd of about 200 students. Walsh University’s University Programming Board, or UPB, sponsored the event.
