North Canton Students Get More Summertime After Gov. Kasich Increases Calamity Days

Gov. John Kasich increased the number of calamity days from three to five, meaning students in the North Canton City School District have fewer snow days to make up

Gov. John Kasich signed a bill Wednesday that would increase the number of calamity days for Ohio schools, bringing North Canton City Schools’ makeup days down from five to three.

This school year, snow and loss of electricity caused North Canton students to miss eight days of school and use all three alotted calamity days. In recent years, districts have had five of calamity days to use throughout the year. But this year, districts started out with only three, a change made during the last administration.

HB 36, according to a press release from the governor’s office, would increase calamity days back to five.

“Our plan at this time is to do makeup days June 3, June 6 and June 7,” Superintendent Michael Gallina said today.

Included in HB 36 is an option for schools to add 30 minutes onto the school day —before the first bell and last bell, to make one hour — to eventually make up those missed days.
