North Canton City School District Rated 82nd in Ohio

State performance index ranks 936 school districts

The Ohio Department of Education released a preview of new performance index rankings of school districts and buildings. The North Canton City School District was 82nd among the 936 districts that were ranked.

"Performance index is actually one component of the state report card," said Dennis Evans, Ohio Department of Education public information officer. "There are other measures on the report card as well."

The performance index scores are different than those on the last report cards because this report used updated data on state testing.

Scores are based on how well each student does on all tested subjects in grades three to eight on Ohio’s Achievement Assessments and on the 10th grade Ohio Graduation Test. Students at all levels – advanced, accelerated, proficient, basic and limited – are included. The percentage of students scoring at each level is calculated and multiplied by the point value assigned to that performance level and the levels are totaled to determine overall score.

"It's a pretty simple formula," Evans said.

Evans stressed that the rankings released so far are preliminary. The final ranking released next year will also incorporate data on the amount of money devoted to classroom instruction and opportunities provided to gifted students.

"Going forward, the ranking will be based on other criteria as well. What we released last week is actually a preview," he said.

North Canton had a performance index score of 105.6221. The top score was 115.9375.

Jackson Local School District was the only Stark County district that ranked near the top of the list (23).

Among nearby communities, Lake Local School District was 36th, Louisville City School District came in at 121, Tuslaw Local at 169, Perry Local at 179 and Plain Local at 191.

The rankings were also broken down among 3,677 schools, many for which performance index schools were not available. The lowest score was 35.4867 for Life Skills Center of Dayton, which was ranked 3,457th.

Wells Academy, a public elementary school in Steubenville, ranked first with a performance index score of 116.1905. Two Cuyahoga County schools —  Constellation Schools: Outreach Academy and Solon High School – were second and third, respectively.

Since NC is not in the top ten does that mean a plea for more money is coming soon?

"Negative Ned" Jim just can't seem to EVER say anything positive about our town, schools, or anything else for that matter. Hey Jim......please increase your efforts to get out of town. It would be appreciated.
