North Canton Middle School Gets Grant to Explore Medieval Art

got a $500 grant from ArtsinStark this year to help students learn more about medieval history and art.

Sixteen grants, ranging from $500-$750, were awarded to schools throughout Stark County at an awards ceremony at Cable Recital Hall in the Cultural Center last month, ArtsinStark Education Coordinator Jennifer Snow said. A total of about $12,000 was awarded that day.

Those grants went to seven school districts, and North Canton Middle School was the only school in North Canton City School District to receive a grant. Only two North Canton schools had applied this year, she said.

“Their project revolves around medieval history, and they’re planning on having students look at different examples of illuminated manuscripts, talk about illuminated letters, colorful borders, illustrations and other things,” Snow said.

“There will be visiting artists to introduce students to calligraphy, then they take what they learned and create their own, describing the growth of the Roman Catholic Church in medieval Europe.”

Teachers Ryan Krieg and Kathy Wyckoff applied for the grant.
